It’s a small thing, but that communication dish at 5:00 is probably the best radar dish build Lego has ever done! The wider base that can still rotate makes it look much more detailed and as if it’s on tracks

I'm always impressed by how quickly you get these sets built and reviewed in such a short space of time. It's a cool set, but it's a little bit sparse, in that it lacks play features for the target audience. This wouldn't be at the top of my Christmas wish list as a kid. I think the smaller of the two medieval castle sets was better than this for play, details and overall value, at a lower price point, but again, that's just my opinion.

Its the kind of set that as a kid I would look at and decide that I would rather build it with my own pieces than buy it. But also, at the price point, I would have saved up for something more interesting. It's a shame because Star Wars has some cool buildings in it. I keep holding out that maybe one day they would make the tower from rebels or medical center from ROS.

I just don't get who it is for - maybe it's just my anecdotal experience, but I don't know any 9 year old's who are into Episode 4 enough to want a play set based on Yavin - my kids love the prequils and newer TV shows a lot more - and on the other hand, it's just not detailed enough for me as an adult fan. I expect it'll be available fairly easily at 20 or even 25% off within a month or two (where I live, I know in the US they don't often get big discounts on Lego) - BUT - as a 49 year old who has a lot of love for Ep 4 and has way, way too much Star Wars lego on display, I still don't have any desire for this set as a display piece. My guess is it'll mostly be bought as a gift by people who know that the person they are buying for is into Star Wars Lego (which is probably how I'll end up with it, based on all the sequel sets I have sitting in the wardrobe bought for me by people who know I like Star Wars lego, but don't know enough to know I despise the sequels)

I think if anything, A set like this should come with a baseplate. Though I know they're getting away from those. Still would feel more substantial having studded surface area to have for play and display.

I could be wrong but I get the impression that Lego Group feels like making new minifigures gives them permission to hike the price even more. A few exclusive minifigs with exclusive accessories? That'll be an extra $50 please!

I'd say Vader's castle still looks better just by virtue of looking more complete (and slightly more detailed on the outside, but that might be subjective). And that's really down to the source material: Vader's castle is a very well defined shape that's fairly easy to properly translate at this scale, whereas Yavin is more complex and the scenery of the trees surrounding it is very important to the location's overall look. So even if the quality is fairly equal between the two, the translation into lego looks more wrong in Yavin's case.

You make a compelling argument on the comparison to Darth Vader's castle. But I feel the former set has a level of aesthetic design sophistication that the Yavin Temple is lacking.

This set kind of reminds me of the Old Battlefront 2 map where the control room was upstairs, which iirc isn’t the case in 2017 Battlefront. Either way, this seems like a good set for Yavin base MOC builders, if it weren’t for that price.

It would be really cool if we got a series of Star Wars ships that's about the same size as the Y-Wing in this set, but with more details. Kinda like a Speed Champions, but for Star Wars. Even the recent X-Wing model from a couple of years ago is a bit oversized for a minifigure, I think.

I’ve been saying this since the 2008 Death Star. The TIE in that/Vader’s castle, the Slave I in Cloud City and now this Y-Wing are some of my favourite builds LEGO has ever done. No doubt in my mind that they’d fly off the shelves if they’re boxed up on their own and sold for $20 a pop.

The age range is determined by two factors: complexity and building time, this would probably have been 7+ if it were smaller, but younger children are not expected to have the patience to build something of this size

The observation point in the tree should have been higher than the temple. A guard on top of the temple will have a better 360 surround view than a guard in that observation point.

I think the price would be fine if they had replaced a few of the particularly problematic stickers with new prints - such as the stickers on the transparent blue panels. Including more prints would make sense if they want to justify higher prices. Cobi has been getting a lot of competitive advantage from their 'sticker free sets' for a really long time now - and Lego has not effectively done anything in response, improving the print-to-sticker ratio would help a lot. This is especially true given the mess (some would even say 'disaster') they got themselves into with the sticker for the Indiana Jones fighter set canopy. Printed panels of the kind appropriate for this command center could be used in a lot of different sets (such as future cruisers and shuttles and headquarters sets, imperial as well as rebel, likely even sets outside this theme such as space or monkey kid or ninjago), so they could certainly get good re-use out of the prints for a return on the investment. I do like the new print in the y-wing.

It released here in Slovakia for 140 in retail shops and I immediately grabbed it, Love the figures and the vehicles. it looks like I'll have a lot of fun modding the structure to look more complete. Your reviews are always amazing!

I remember looking at the prototype of this set way back in 2010 in the visual dictionary. It’s honestly crazy seeing it as an actual set now and it’s not too too much different from that og prototype

My advice is just get a random modular building - it has way more play value and way more room to put your troopers (good or bad) on top of. As a fan of only lego star wars, i tried buying a few modular buildings and filled them with troopers and it looks amazing. You get the actual building and not overprices bones and skin as this set is.

The first thing I thought when I first saw the shape of this build was that it seemed similar to Vader's Castle so I'm really glad you pointed that out - it's nice when great minds think alike :) I definitely won't be getting this until it's decently discounted. I appreciate your work, Jang.

I like this. It's a little simplistic looking, but it still feels thoughtfully designed. It ends up giving it sort of a classic charm. And I love that cute little Y-Wing.

I just dont understand a $160 “age-limited” set. The only thing I can think was lego thought it would be the easiest way to put the bare minimum and get the most money for it. As a collector, I wouldnt even consider it unless it was half off. As a dad, I would never get this for my son unless he wanted it more than anything else for a birthday or christmas.

It’s a 4+ set. Well it looks and feels like one for sure… too many parts went into the y-Wing, the base itself lacks so bad in parts. There are some awesome MOCs of this base out there

Too bad the entrance only works with the mini Y-Wing, or maybe an A-Wing. It's an okay set, but not a 170 bucks set. More like 90.

Looks like +4 sets. Just the mini figures and maybe Y-Wing some interesting. Lack of details , with this design it would be a good chance to have a bit expensive but more complex set especially briefing room etc …

I believe that this is an excellent toy! Lots of features, minifigures, and places to put them. Kids would love this set. Unfortunately, I think that because LEGO has never made Yavin 4 base before, all the adult collectors are going to rage that it is a playset and not a Master Builder Series set.

But to me, Vaders castle is hard to call it a “play set” it’s really just “his castle” whereas this seems a lot more like a play set and also given the large amount of mini figures. So I feel it’s kinda hard to compare those 2 sets

Love the Y-wing hoped it would have been a separate set along with the bomber like they did for the previous X-wing and Tie Fighter as the pieces from the Y-wing and leftover budget could have been used to make the overall base better, an additional Rebel Fleet Trooper and the tree build far more detailed. For the Price i'll pass but A Yavin 4 base wasn't on m priorities anyway glad it came to fruition though as the set was developed but unreleased, pretty sure it was in a LEGO Star Wars Book ages ago.

JANG, do you think that LEGO intentionally jacked up the price of this set since this is the first Yavin base ever released & they knew that collectors would want it due to that? I know there are a lot of minifigs, but otherwise I just can’t JUSTIFY 😆 (sorry) that price - even as a STAR WARS set.

I honestly think that this set has its merit , I think it's a well designed " doll house" like set and I think a lot of kids will enjoy this. I do think the price is just too much , I would've like to have seen an small X-Wing included as they included Garven Dreis , or a little more density to it's interior space. But other than that I think this a pretty decent set.

Comparing this to the Hoth base from 2007 which was $50 at the time with a very similar setup makes me sad… even with inflation it’s less than half the price of this one with a full sized snow speeder and honestly a better set of figures imo

The Yavin base here just looks so plain and basic. Maybe that is down to how the building looks in the movies, but I'm not sure. There's lots of room for minifigs inside, but most are just empty rooms with nothing for the figures to do. Even a kid would find that boring. I suppose this is a case where kids really have to use their imagination here. Maybe it's more fun in hand than it appears. The best thing about it is the Y-wing, which is my favorite starfighter. The thing that's unfortunate about this is it means we probably won't get a Y-wing on its own til this set is retired. How does it scale and compare to the other recent fighters! And yep, it is definitely over-priced, and so was Vader's castle. Holy moly JANG actually got some halfway way decent R2 unit prints! 🤣

Lego in 2023.. lowering the age rating to give far less content yet still charge full adult collector prices. At least in aus, the discounting and increased availability at cheaper retailers compared to previous years could hint that overall this corporate greed experiment isn't exactly working out, so hopefully end 2024/2025+ sets will return to being more inspiring. Yes, i almost bought vaders castle in aftermarket when seeing this set. Glad i didn't... ;)

I would certainly pay no more than 100€ for this on sale. If it doesn’t go down that low, I’m not buying it. Very disappointing price for what you get and I agree the 150€/$ price tag would be the extreme but realistic price for it in the crazy world we now live in.

about 15 years ago AAA publishers realised they could continue to charge people for the games they played after they bought them, and not enough people kicked up a stink when it started. now that that attitude is common and widespread AAA publishers have tarnished their reputation for profits. i can't help but feel like the same thing is happening in the lego community. Not subscription models thank god, but dodgy pricing in general. people have been disgruntled with abnormally high lego prices for years now, and if we continue to just sit by while prices get jacked up more and more lego will think they can get away with it. Lego. please please please decrease your prices, even a little. im running out of money for lego 😢

Joking aside, it's a lot closer than I expected, I thought this would be smaller; the high amount of figures add a lot of value but this Yavin 4 Rebel Base set is still far too expensive. But people will still buy it regardless because it has so many figures.
