"The Parting Glass" is an Irish and Scottish traditional song, often sung at the end of a gathering of friends. It was allegedly the most popular song sung in both Scotland and Ireland before Robert Burns wrote "Auld Lang Syne". This song has a dual heritage as some of the lyrics were quoted in a letter by a Scottish man who was making his way over to Ireland; around this time there were many Scottish settlers arriving in Ireland and so the song was then combined with both cultures.
The Irish song is thoughtful and quiet, though the old Scottish version, "Good Night and Joy Be With You All," is quite lively and uses roughly the same melody, an old type of tune called the Scots Measure.
The celebrated Irish folk song collector, Colm O Lochlainn, pointed out that The Parting Glass shares its melody with Sweet Cootehill Town. This is another traditional farewell song, this time involving a man leaving Ireland to go to America.

For me...people like Liam Clancy, Tommy Makem, Dylan et al...they're more than musicians...they're poets, storytellers, bards... The world is a sadder place without these two...but their music will live forever... and inspire the next generations

Earð-Stapa 530 I never had the honor of meeting Mr. Clancy. I was however graced with the good fortune of Mr. Makem and his sons here in Dover, NH. A gentle and modest man of great dignity. He is and always will be a great champion of the working class.Oh how we need him still.

To be sung at the beginning of my wake (Wild Ass Keggar Experience). As sure as God created the good green Earth, Liam Clancy was born to stand on a stage and tug at our heart strings. A personal friend of Bob Dylan, who pails in comparison. Thank God for the Irish who sing sad songs for the rest of us.

Was Liam a singer, a poet or a story teller? It seems like he combines all 3 at times to create a connection with the listener like few others. His can invigorate with craic and haunt with sorrow.

How is this Irish? It was written in Scotland and sung for hundreds of years in Scotland before it even reached Ireland's shores. It is just a song and songs don't have a nationality, well only if the country are mentioned by name, that's about it.

But since it falls unto my lot that I should rise and you should not, Ach thiteann sé go dtí mo bheart, go éireoidh mé in ionad thú, I'll gently rise and I'll softly call, "Goodnight and joy be with you all!"
