If I could share my excitement right now, I'd gladly do so. I just made my first Burp Cloth and It actually worked. The excitement is real Jan. I was the one at school that refused wholeheartedly to sew. I was the one always sat at the back of the classroom in disgrace. Oh, if my sewing teacher could see me now!!!! Mrs Scott, you would be so proud of me. Jan, you are an amazing teacher. Hubby thinks Ive gone nuts, as in 32 years of marriage, Ive refused to sew a button on his shirts, sew a hem on his trousers, etc etc. Im having so much fun right now with your channel. Many Many Thanks, hun xx

I learned to sew by making burp rags with my church’s women's group as a service project to benefit a local NICU. They were a perfect learning project as the pattern we used was very forgiving, and all the seams are just straight seams. I have gone on to teach elementary school aged girls to sew with the same project. When my grandson was born a few years ago I of course made a huge stack for him. Much to my delight, this little baby loved the soft flannel rags and they became his security blankie/comfort item that he took everywhere he went with him! And the best part? He had at least a dozen of these burp cloths and was happy with any one of them, so no inconsolable child crying if his one comfort item gets lost as he had the whole stack to choose from at anytime. The pattern used by this KZbinr is very similar to the pattern I first learned, except I would say her version is a little nicer than my everyday pattern. I would use this pattern when making burp cloths as a shower gift, for example. Great tutorial!

Great tutorial. Very simple, yet cute and functional. I have made about 30 -40 burp clothes the last two years, and I love the idea of using terry cloth or towels for the backing. Also, running just the two stitching lines as fold lines is brilliant! Thanks! Am making more burp clothes soon for a new baby.
@lindaweber4835 Жыл бұрын
Very clear tutorial! I’ve found that it’s easier to fold the edges of the opening to the inside if I leave it in the center of the seam and not at the corner. Otherwise, this is exactly how I make burp cloths.
@JanHowell Жыл бұрын
Great tip
@bestillandknow91274 жыл бұрын
A little trick before you turn inside out .... where the opening is at > press the unsewn seam allowance open by pulling tight from backtack to backtack & it will automatically form the straight edge of the seam then press with iron. Now turn it right side out & the seam naturally falls into place with less fudging & burning your fingers tips-lol

I definitely pre wash all my fabrics prior to cutting and sewing . Cottons, flannels , terry cloth all shrink at different percentages. If the fabric is not pre washed, when the receiver washes and throws them in the dryer, you can have a distorted rectangle. I wash all my burp clothes, iron them and place them in a plastic bag ready to be used by the new mom. I also place a note indicating ready to use.

I sew when I can find time or when I find a neat item to sew and with two young mothers in the neighborhood getting ready to have baby girls, I started digging through by flannel material and I have some really beautiful pieces to finally make something to give away. You want to avoid getting a towel that is really plush or thick. The basic towels at Walmart work great. I find towels are less expensive than buying yardage of that fabric.

What a great, clear tutorial. Should I prewash my terry and fabric before making? Thank you.
@JanHowell3 жыл бұрын
It's always a good idea to pre-wash fabric before sewing if you can. That way everything shrinks the same when washed. These burp clothes, I usually don't pre-wash, but it's totally up to you. If both the top and bottom fabrics are the same fiber content, like cotton, you should be ok to not pre-wash.
