Thank you for such a detailed video. I just started trying to make small blankets and this binding method is lovely. My first project was a wee pad for my guinea pig. Printed fleece center with a coordinating floral border and an old kitchen towel inside for absorption. It turned out nice and looks so fancy!!

@@JanHowell Hi Jan! Not sure if this is okay? I ended up making the top piece 33" square and the backing 41" square.... 8" difference. How big should my batting be on the back? Is it always 5" smaller than the backing piece, in other words, should the batting be cut at 36" square? Thanks! I'm so excited to get started! Will those measurements work?

Thank you jan. I have a friend that wanted a blanket made from cotton fabric. I have only done the blankets using flannel or a fleece which always turns out to be very nice. I will try the batting. you can di this same thing without having to -5" from your quilt. just make sure that your batting is +5" and you backing is +10" of whatever your quilt size is. this way you can make your quilt size a little larger if you need to. Also keep in mind the binding is going to be 1/2 of however much extra you put. for example this was 10" so the binding was 5". So if i made the binding 8" i would want my batting to be 4" because that is what width of my binding total will be. i like this method of self binding when i need the extra width, and the roll over method when i want a thin binding.

Yes, if you want a 2 1/2 inch border/binding, you just add 10 " to each side. It does not have to be square. I hope that was helpful.

thank you for this and other great tutorials. My sisters have asked me to make them a card table cover each...and this design would work perfectly (without batting) though I would like the binding to be narrower, would a 3 inch size differenc all the way round work the same at 5 inch? Basically its a bound 43 inch square...how big would my binding piece need to be to acheive that size with a narrower bind, I am thinking 49 inches??
@JanHowell
@JanHowell 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Cameo, For a 43 inch finished square table cloth with a 2 1/2 inch binding, which I think would be great for the project you are making, cut the outer piece to 46 x 46 inches and the inner piece 40 x 40 inches. Use a 1/4 inch seam allowance. I would love to know how it goes, and even to see a picture. If you have Instagram, you can tag a photo to #youmaketisimple. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Super new to all of this, but I’m making a “t-shirt” quilt (in quotations because there are shirts of varying weights, sweatshirts, and even a block made from a pair of jean shorts) and want to add batting with the self-binding method you describe here. It’s going to be a rather large blanket, and you said at the end that there should be more quilting if it’s larger. How would I do that with a t-shirt quilt? Thanks so much for the video and the help!

I looked for the link you mentioned regarding cutting directions but can find it. I have a rectangle size frog panel that I am making a quilt from a wasn’t sure exactly what my back should be . My topper is 32. Then I added 2-1/2 on all four sides for the batting For some reason I can’t figure out how many inches I need for the extra backing to wrap around for the binding. Is it 5” on all four sides?
@JanHowell

Yes, use the same measurement, no matter what it is, on all four side. This video goes over some more details on cutting the fabric. kzbin.info/www/bejne/apWZgqF5gqqlg7c

Please Does these numbers work on a bit larger oblong baby blanket?? Every single vid I saw was a square and a small one like 40 x 30. Thank you.

Yes, you can make them any size. Just add that 10" to both edges for the front and back. I hope that makes sense.

My dear auntie made that for me years ago. I think I have the pattern somewhere. It would be a good pattern to re-do.

At what dimensions do you have to quilt the batting, would you say?

Hi Jan, I hope you are well and in good spirits. Well, I completed my first blanket. The center is 30", while the back is 40". The inseam is 3/8". I was proud of myself until I noticed the border widths are uneven. Two sides of the blanket are 2" wide, while two sides are 2 1/2" wide. I can't figure out what I did incorrectly. I expected the borders to be smaller because I used a 3/8" inseam. But this problem???? Please, please advise. Thank you.

Sounds like you pieces were not square. They don't have to be, but if you cut the length at 30 inches but the width wss different it will make difference. Say you have a center that measures 30 x 35, the back piece needs to be 40 x 45. Then you need to make sure that when you sew it together you line up the 30 and 40 edges and the 35 and 45 edges. I hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have further questions.

Hi Jan,Made a couple of the flannel baby blankets,I tried adding the batting but t don't think I cut it right.So if I'm making it 40 for the back and 30 for the front what size do I cut the batting?Help I ruined a enough batting I quess I'll be making pot holders.

Hi Maria, I'm sorry to hear that this has been confusing for you. Let's see if I can clear things up for you. Fabric and Batting Measurements: It's always the same formula for any size. So if you wanted a finished blanket that measures 35 x 40, the back piece would measure 40 x 45. The batting is 5 inches smaller than the back piece (35 x 40), the same measurement as the finished blanket. The front piece would measure 30 x 35 inches. So in your case. Your back piece measures 40 inches square. The BATTING SHOULD BE CUT TO MEASURE 35 INCHES. The front piece will measure 30 inches square. If you still need further assistance, email me fibersandtwigs@gmail.com.

@JanHowell

It is a little intimidating. I have to make sure I am paying attention for sure. After sewing the first dog ear, don't cut and turn it right side out to make sure it's right, then cut. That way you can unpick, but you can't uncut :)

I felt the same!!🤣🤣I had to use a seam ripper three times. At the end it came out really good. That little square 1/4” box we had to mark, now I know why you have to stop at 1/4”.
