@pikkon8995 жыл бұрын
I honestly think it wasn't just the song that he hated but the circumstances behind it. He said the label didn't "hear the single" when they listened to the album, so Jani wrote "Cherry Pie" and the rest is history. In other words, their finished album meant nothing to the label until "Cherry Pie" came into the picture and that's what he became known for and it really didn't help that the album was released at the end of the Glam era and the fact that come September of the following year, Nirvana and Grunge would take over MTV.

I liked the song, but I feel so bad for what he was put through by people because of it. The lyrics and video are still funny. But bed of roses, blind faith, uncle Tom's cabin, you're the only hell your mama ever raised. If you can't hear the art in those songs, then you're a fkn idiot.

@shortwinger3 Жыл бұрын
I don’t usually reply to comments this old but I have a hard time believing the second interview. I don’t deny that Jani was going through a shitty time during the first interview, but I know from experience that when you’re pushed to the point when you’ve just had it, you tend to care a lot less about choosing your words carefully. Jani genuinely had no intention of writing that song. He said it himself: He was forced to compromise his artistic vision against his will because the label wanted more money. It’s just one of many examples of labels being greedy shit heads who think they have a say in what makes a song great when they’re nothing more than privileged money hungry over fed and over paid pant suits. So when personal issues pushed him to the point of giving no fucks he was like “I’m so sick of this shit. I’m over it. Fuck what any one thinks about me. I’m telling it how it is. I’m done.” I wouldn’t be surprised to find out if that second interview was set up for the purpose of making him walk back on what he said simply because it was bad press for the label.

I can see where Jani is coming from. If I was a musician under a big label, and I was forced to write this obvious sellout hit single that I sincerely wasn't into, just for the sake of keeping the execs happy, I might just resent my career being defined by it, too. If you wanted to be taken seriously as a musician, and instead of your whole catalog being treasured, you were forever branded a one hit wonder whose only big hit was a song you wrote on a pizza box (if I'm not mistaken, I think that's the story) you might feel the same.
@satinwhip4 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. The label just wanted an anthem type of song. Gene and Paul don't cry about "Rock And Roll All Nite". Nobody made him write "Cherry Pie". If the label had brought the song in from a third party songwriter and forced the band to record it, that would have been different. They didn't. Jani wrote it. He has to live with it. Well, you know what I mean...

The problem was not Cherry Pie itself, but timing, it got popular in 1990/91, the tail end of the whole LA glam metal scene and soon enough grunge/alternative rock took over to kill all these bands quickly. If this song got popular years earlier (say 1985), then Warrant would of offered more memorable stuff.

Its despicable how many people in the comments think being famous is more important than actually being true to yourself

But come on! The song wasn’t as bad as he made it out to be. He’s acting like he was Billy Squire prancing around in a pink jumper and wrapping himself in satin sheets!

Uncle Tom's Cabin is one of the best rock songs and I ever heard, and the story is so nice. Its cip is one of the best I've seen too. I think these recording industry execs are the worst kind of lime you would ever find in grease-land.

On the bright side, He wrote the song. That can go a long ways for all that radio royalty cash. If you're gonna sing a terrible song, may as well be the one who wrote it.

I keep coming back to this, Cherry Pie was a staple at The Hungry Years in Brighton, before Janie Laine died I had a funny feeling about him and went to metal Sludge to see what he was up to and news broke he had died - we don't do 'he passed' in England, i find it vile but its just semantics I don't know why but before looking him up I had a strong suspicion that he was dead and inevitably and horribly was not really surprised.. Anyway, he was a great singer, burned some bridges it seems but whatever, gave massive joy to an inordinate amount of people, so God Speed, wish Janie and his family every good grace x

My wife was a big Warrant fan, and I tell you, Warrant was one of the best bands that came out of that genre. The BEST Warrant albums were "D.R.F.S.R." "Uncle Toms Cabin." I.E Cherry Pie. and the BEST, OF ALL 3, was "Dog Eat Dog". Man what an album, it was heavy, some songs were deep, and heartfelt. R.I.P. Jani.

This guy was great! Sux he's gone. Sad. My friend met him at a mall when they came to town. The hotel is on one end. Swank joint. Said Jani was super nice. Record co screwed him. Think of the music he had left to do.

Joey Allen said on Eddie Trunk that Jani wrote “Cherry Pie” after hearing the song “All Lips and Hips” by Electric Boys. The influence is incredible.
@Michael-jw6et Жыл бұрын
I just listened to All Lips and No Hips, and it's very clear he ripped a lot of that song off when writing Cherry Pie. No doubt about it.

@zman1974 I'm a big Warrant fan from '88 forward, and I think THAT was the problem ... The problem was that he wrote it. As soon as he demoed it and gave it to the guy, the record was called Cherry Pie. It was not a conversation after that ... As the song existed, that was gonna be the title ... it was in no way gonna be an album cut (like track #9 or something). Jani's desire to have Uncle Tom's Cabin as the lead track, let alone CD title, was history. Nobody cared. But, it rocks, it sold huge!

Cherry Pie was like Deep Purple's Smoke on the Water, I was oblivious to Warrant in their hey day even though I thought I knew it all. It was Cherry Pie's catchy bubble gum hook that turned me on to their other music which I went to cover in bands as a bass player and it heightened the energy and absolute fun that was the 80's. What it did to Mr Lane personally, professionally, commercially is a separate issue.
