Okay to be honest, i've been searching different videos on how to sing in the whistle register. Sure, there are alot of results that came out, but not all are proven effective actually. And as I came to this video, her tips REALLY WORKED for me because I found it very easy as the steps are specific and not complicated in my opinion. Now? I have accessed the whistle register, my Highest is C7 , no joke and lowest is C6. I tried some mariah carey whistles and Morissette amon whistle and it worked. But I don't practice it everyday because my voice also needs rest. Anyway, GOOD JOB MS. JANICE! You have another subscriber herreeee. Thank youuuuuuuuu

@soulfulserenity85226 жыл бұрын
Roshni. S Yep, they absolutely do! Just like how people use Chest when they shout (though they should use Mix instead). The only difference is the intensity and the control. You have no control over a scream or shout because it is volitile but you have control over singing :)

I kinda got the technique but not really sure if I'm doing it correctly. I can produce the whistle note as I'm sucking the air in. But if I try to push the air out..it sounds stuck and cracked. What would be the best way about trying to learn the technique with out damage to my voice? Any advice would help. Thanks

Hi, do you hold classes for whistle? I lost it. Or this video is enough?
@JaniceYapTV8 жыл бұрын
Hello Hanz, at the moment we are not conducting vocal classes on the whistle alone. However, learning how to access the whistle register is already part of the Unlock Your Voice™ Technique, which we teach as part of our vocal syllabus to all our students through our vocal courses. It would be sufficient to start with this video for now, as these are the basics to getting into the whistle register. But of course, other factors come into play as well, if the whistle register is not working out for you just yet - it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what unless I can hear you in person. I would say, work with this video first, and see how it goes :) If you’re still having problems, you can pop over to our school for a Vocal Discovery Lesson to properly analyse your voice and learn immediate ways to solve some of your existing vocal problems that may be contributing to your not being able to access the whistle register. We could work specifically on the whistle register then too, if that is your vocal goal. However, do note that it takes time for a singer to learn the muscle coordination required to sing in the whistle register. The time can vary from a day to weeks, depending on what vocal habits a singer currently has. More info on the Vocal Discovery Lesson can be found here: www.unlockyourvoice.com.my/vocal-discovery-lesson/ Rest assured, if you’re not based in Malaysia, the lesson can also be conducted online via Skype. Simply send your email address & contact no to info@unlockyourvoice.com.my to get started ;)

@JaniceYapTV8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subscribing, Hiro. You can tap into your whistle note even if you’ve passed your 20’s - there isn’t an age limit to accessing this vocal register :) And yes, it’d be helpful to have a good rest before attempting the whistle, especially if you’re new to this. This is because the vocal cords have to be really relaxed so you can zip them up gently. After a little vocal warm-up, it’s quite a good time to try it first thing in the morning, before our usual vocal habits kick-in the through out the rest of the day. That said, once you’re used to using your whistle register, it’d be quite easy to access it whenever you want ;)

@JaniceYapTV8 жыл бұрын
It's a matter of getting used to accessing your whistle register. Using it as often as possible would help - it'll strengthen muscle memory for your vocal cords to switch to whistle mode whenever you want ;)
@hyun8087 жыл бұрын
JaniceYapTV I also cant access it all the time and apparently its because once you start doing it or when youre doing a lot of talking / singing already then your vocal chords can swell even slightly so the hole that produces it dissapears or something. Apparently its best when your vocal chords are relaxed thats why its easy to do early in the morning after a night's rest . How true do you think this is ? It makes sense for me .
@tangerinetw8 жыл бұрын
My vocal chord would fall apart when hitting above G, how can I keep zipping it?
@JaniceYapTV8 жыл бұрын
To continue zipping your cords, your throat area has to be relaxed and your vocal cords have to be zipped up GENTLY. In other words, there shouldn’t be any feeling of tightness or strain. Zipping up the vocal cords can be difficult for some, for a number of reasons. It could be that you’re singing too breathily, not practising good breath support, vocal injury & etc. However, if you feel your cords are already zipped up, and yet you still can’t seem to go any higher, it is likely that you’re not in the right vocal register just yet. To sing whistle notes, while zipping up the cords, a singer also has to allow his/her voice to change into the whistle register from the head voice. When singing in the whistle register, the resonance is still somewhat feels like it's resonating in the head voice area, but it feels like another flip from head voice into a higher resonance. It's hard to explain this, but basically the feeling is similar to when you shift from chest voice to your mix, and from your mix to your head voice - you'll feel like there's a flip into a higher register. You can watch my video on "How To Sing Comfortably", where I talk about the different vocal registers, to get a better idea :)

Technically, the air should be exhaled when we phonate (make a sound). However, when we sing in the whistle register, there is very little air exhaled. As such, it is not uncommon for singers to have described that the feeling is as if the air is going backwards; as if we do when we inhale ;)

I'm getting into whistles more and more every day, however I'm having problems using them on a scale. Seems like random notes pop out even when I'm trying to focus on one particular note. Any good exercises you can recommend for more flexibility? Also, why are my whistles stronger in the afternoon and almost nonexistent in the morning? Thanks for your help!
@JaniceYapTV7 жыл бұрын
You could try the following: Speaking in the whistle in the morning (yes it is possible) and/or humming up your vocal range into your whistle notes. A simple 1-2-3-2-1 sort of scale will do. As for why the whistles are stronger for some singers at different times of the day, that entirely depends on how comfortable the singer’s voice is at that time of the day, and also how “free” the singer’s voice (from his/her other usual vocal habits that may be prohibiting his/her access to the whistle register) at that particular time of the day ;)

You can start by practicing your whistle notes on a scale first. 1-2-3-2-1 (Do-re-mi-re-do) would be good to start with and try taking it higher and higher. It takes effort, but practicing how to phonate each note properly in the whistle first is important, before taking it any higher. This will help us produce whistle notes that have better resonance and tone :)

I still cant do whistles notes any advice?
@JaniceYapTV7 жыл бұрын
Hi Gustavo, it'll be good to start by finding and getting really comfortable with your head voice first. Most people who can't access their whistle register at all are normally very strongly bound to their chest voices, making it hard for them to enter the head resonance, where the whistle register resonates. It'll be helpful to get used to singing high notes well first, before attempting the even higher ones in whistle. It'll take aome time and patience, but extending your vocal range takes some practice and it always helps to extend it few notes at a time instead of jumping straight up or down. I can't really comment further until I hear what it is you're doing or struggling with, hope this helps ;)

I sang up to C#7 in this video, perhaps the whistle notes sung in the songs you’ve tried may be in a lower part of the whistle register? You can play out the notes you’ve successfully “whistled” on the keyboard to find out. I can’t say for sure if you’re singing at the lower or high part of the whistle register because I’m not sure which songs you’re referring to and I’ll need to hear you. It’s likely that it’s a lower part of the whistle register though, because most people who can sing at the higher whistle register will usually have no problems singing downwards into the lower whistle register as well. On the other hand, those who are still developing the whistle register will take some time to expand their whistle register in to the higher notes :) If that’s what you’re going through, you just need to keep at this, keep working on your whistle register to expand it further. Press on!

THANK YOU SO MUCH I LOVED IT!!! I am a 13 year old baritone (yes, my voice has matured already) and i have a whistle register. I actually posted a video of it if you wouldnt mind checking it out :) I always had a little consistency problem, but lately i have been studying alot and have not been having much time to practice and i noted that i literally cant control my whistle register anymore! I know i still have it because sometimes when im on my higher head voice range it breaks into whistle but i cant purposely acces it and control it anymore!! Do you have tips on how to be able to enter the whistle register anytime and with less effort like you do? Thanks in advance!
@JaniceYapTV8 жыл бұрын
I’ve checked out your video, and it sounds like you’re already whistling in that video, though I suspect you can potentially go much higher than that! :) As I’ve mentioned in reply to “Love Vocals” below, to be able to sing whistle notes anytime, it's a matter of getting used to accessing your whistle register at any time. And, using it as often as possible would help (like talking and singing in your whistle notes early morning before you have your breakfast, while you’re driving, taking a shower & etc) - it'll strengthen muscle memory for your vocal cords to switch to whistle mode whenever you want ;) Additionally, you can practice quick jumps from your chest voice to your whistle register too - that way, you’ll also strengthen muscle memory for your vocal cords to switch quickly between those to registers instead of having to go through your head register first before getting there. A song like Mariah Carey’s “Emotion”, the “In…side” part, is good song to practice this with.

While unhealthy techniques can cause permanent damage to the voice in the long run, it is not always the case - your vocal cords could still be in healthy shape, but are simply not working at it's full potential because unhealthy techniques can restrict the vibrating, coordination, stretching & etc of the cords. It's best to check with an ENT specialist to determine if your voice has really been ruined - you might be pleasantly surprised that it really isn't ;) And if it's not, you can use healthy vocal technique to hit those high notes again. These 3 steps in the video should be a good start to point you in that direction.

How long has it been? In any case, there are very effective treatments now for Vocal Nodules - you should explore your treatment options and you could possibly restore your vocal cords to their healthy condition. In the meantime, take it easy on your voice - whenever you feel any strain, tightness or discomfort when singing/speaking, it's a sign of unhealthy vocal technique. Don't continue singing/speaking when that happens, instead develop and practice healthier techniques in vocalising/singing. Singing is supposed to feel easy & comfortable, and you can definitely achieve this with some practice :) All the best!

I hear a lot about how to hit whistle, but I want to know how to control it! Because I can do it, but it's so hard to control it...

It'll be best to practice the whistle notes, note by note. Using a simple 1-2-3-2-1 sort of scale up the piano. This way, one can discipline himself/herself to refine their every whistle note, note by note :) It will take time to master this, but it'll be fun and worth it :)
