Powerful song from Janis. When this song came out, I remember going to school and observing who the different characters in her song were in my school. You can do that in any school at any time. In gym class we used to play kickball all the time and the gym teacher would pick 2 random people to be captains and go through the choosing process. Obviously, you pick the best athletes first and then your friends. I did get chosen as a captain one day and decided to pick the kids that always get picked last first. Our team that day was pretty bad, but we had fun and I did it with this song in mind.

I thinks most people can relate to this song in some way. That’s the genius of Janis Ian. She is one of my all time favorite artists. She’s an amazing songwriter and guitarist. I saw her in concert twice, she even gave me her bracelet. She’s very kind and one of the most underrated artists so our time. Please react to “ society’s child “ next. She wrote it when she was just 15. Great song.

Hello Angela: Strange how a song can be so poignant, yet so beautiful. Janis Ian is a masterful artist, and the fact that the lyrics are autobiographical only adds to the impact of listening to them. As for the highschool bullying, I suspect that dandelions love to mock and deride the rosebud because it has no splendor. Then one day the rose blooms, and the dandelions dry up in shame, and are swept away on a breeze. You, dear lady, have bloomed. Thank you for reacting to this classic. Well done! 👍👍❤❤

This song came out when I was around 17. Some of the "popular" girls picked on me often and the popular guys giggled at me and whispered behind my back. It was an awful time. Until I got into concert band and marching band. Then I found something of myself to be proud of. As Barry Manilow says, "Misfits aren't misfits among other misfits".

Loved your reaction. All of us nerdy artistic teens in the 1970s had Janice's "Between the Lines" album in our record collections and listened to this song regularly. When we sang along it felt like we were pushing back on all the unfairness we perceived in our small worlds. Of course as we grew up the awkwardness and pain faded away but going on 50 years later listening to "17" still brings back twinges.

When this 1st came out i was very young, and the 70 lyrics.. the songs then made you listen to the lyrics front n center.. james taylor, Carly Simon, cat steven, jim croce on n on but this song made me hyper aware of others feelings, and to this day its made me a kinder better human being i like to believe. I always sat in the background and watched others reaction to how they were being treated. Id always intervene when i saw sadness or shame or someone being bullied id always stop it. She still does this song and it sounds 100% just like this still after all these years gone by her voice n skills are rock solid on point. We were all 17.

Congratulations my friend Angela!! ...Now here you have your best new year gift!!....Today it is very difficult to find reactors like you who have never reacted to the best singer in the world, Dimash Kudaibergen, who has 7 octaves and 3 semitones vocal range (An alien) ... Maybe someone made you a request to react to Dimash, but you have not had time .... I am going to dare to recommend that you meet Dimash, because when you do it for the first time, your life as reactor will change forever ....For example, the number of views that you have today, it will increase by 300% in a matter of a few hours and you will get a lot of new subscribers.....But when you react to Dimash, don't do it with his most recent songs ... I recommend that you go to the year 2017 and react to the song that made him a global idol ... I mean the performance he did Dimash from the famous French song called "SOS D'un Terrien en Détresse", when he participated in the famous Chinese reality show The Singer in that year 2017 ... With that performance Dimash earned the reputation of being the best singer on the planet, so I recommend you start with that one .... You can also start with the other famous live version of that song that Dimash did the following year 2018 when he was invited to the famous Slavic Bazzar festival in Belarus .... Both performances are from another planet....Your life will never be the same again, after reacting for the first time to Dimash...And your first reaction to Dimash will be something very special, so I recommend that you do the best job of your life as a reactor, because that first video will be seen by thousands of people around the world, maybe millions...I hope to see you first reaction soon and if you don't mind, I'd like you to mention me as the person who recommended reacting to Dimash, but if you don't want to, that's fine...

Very few songs are this profound and meaningful. The first picture I saw of Ms. Ian amazed me on how such a beautiful woman could experience such misery at a young age. Decades later I asked my two nieces after sharing this song with them, who happened to be close to 17, and they explained the differences and the petty attacks. Nobody is free from the hurt of the "Lord of the Flies" atmosphere in high school. It' all means very little about how great or bad your high school and college years were. It matters who you become.

Great outro showing lots of perspective and wisdom. So glad you recovered from the tests and tribulations of high school, where I think most everyone feels some amount of insecurity, but many turn their own insecurities against others, to make themselves feel better about themselves. You are lovely and seem to have a positive spirit and now have the confidence that real life, grounded living provides. I'm happy for you. I found your words and reflections inspiring. I think it would be satisfying for each of us to be able to go back and relive part of high school knowing what we do now, but since it's not possible, much healthier for all of us not to dwell on the past, and move on to be our best selves, which by your outro it sure sounds like you have done. Good for you! ☮️ Steve in Kansas

You are beautiful now. Your personality is on point to be sweet and kind. I've subscribed to you for a long time now and enjoy you so much that I repeat many of your video's. Keep it coming dear! And like you just said......"There's always another place and time." And it's your time now.

All of us were awkward. I was a geek on the cheerleading squad, never included in the cheerleading games. Others thought I had it all, but they were wrong. I remember the 17 year old pain at 65. But, you are right, it doesn’t matter now, and didn’t matter then.

In our male teen lives, many many of us passed up girls who were pretty on the outside but really beautiful on the inside in favor of those girls who were beautiful on the outside but truly ugly inside, and did it mindlessly. We had no idea the pain our shallow view of life caused those beautiful souls who felt so much less than people about who life would eventually prove were so much less than them. But at 17, that truth was not yet revealed.
