I am devastated that Janis will no longer tour again. Everyone should petition the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to induct her. It's a sin that she's never been honored that way. Also, the Kennedy Center Honors must include her.
@GrandmaSmith-jn1uy8 ай бұрын
I do not pay attention to such things, mostly, but I cannot understand how the Kennedy Honors have overlooked one of our greatest, most original and talented singer song writers! Yes, we must write and remind them. We must remind them of "Valentines Day" and "Society's Child", "Still Standing Here", "Better Times", "Ugly Girl" and many others. I just heard one from 1957 commemorating the mixed race couple who won the right for their marriage to be legal. Her voice is so beautiful and expressive and her point so well put! It was a great way to remember Dr. Martin Luther King's birthday. I do not remember it, I was only 8 then, but we had just returned from overseas. I had seen the "Whites Only" signs , and I was stunned and heartbroken. It made no sense to prevent anyone from using a water fountain in summer in Florida.

How many of us grew up in the 70's during the post-Vietnam drug-induced, flower power era...listening to all manner of singer songwriters...I could relate to Ms. Ian's songs better than the Carpenters, despite having collected albums of both artists...Listening to Janis Ian tonight at age 65 (my age not hers)...I'm reminded how much better Janis Ian was, both as an artist, songwriter, and vocalist...She's still relevant. She's still brilliant! She's a quiet and honest voice in a fog of silly songs...STILL!

I will never, ever...as long as I live...forget a concert with Janis Ian in Austin in the 70's. I was sure no one loved her as much as I did so...I went alone. When I bought my ticket, the guy at the ticket office said..."just one?" He ended up joining me in the seat next to me. It was so sweet and...precious...and memorable...because we were both so rapt...so taken with her music. One of the most memorable nights of my life. Janis---you will always be relevant for me, and I suspect, for that young man as well.. May you live long, beautifully, and with the same spirit you showed all of us of that era. At Seventeen is in my opinion one of the best songs written, at least in the English language. It is a classic song because no matter what generation you are, or where you live, almost everyone has felt this way at some point. That they are not pretty enough, not cool enough, not rich enough, that they are an outcast and don’t fit in. Especially as a teenager or young adult. I was born about 20 years after the song was released, but the moment I heard it I loved it and felt a connection. Janis Ian is a truly gifted songwriter.
