Janis was born simply 6 months prior to me and I have been in awe of her ever since 1967 when I was first blessed by hearing the "voice of angels". As Janis continued to share heart, mind, soul w/the world I began a solitary career in physics lasting 35+ years. We were however both liberals, marching against Vietnam & for Civil Rights and eventually did change our world. I'm so grateful that in 1951, this Earth was given the "Gift" of Janis for us to cherish all these years.

A beautiful song I’ve played dozens of times since rediscovering Janis again after many years. The piano playing is superb, truly a heart -lifting song. I even sought out the God & FBI album to make sure I could play it anytime.

I remember her first hit, "At 17", in 1975, which I believe hit #1 on top 40 radio, and I was taken by her talent. I'm about a year older than her, and I've followed her career. This song was never released as a single, but it is the most stunningly beautiful tune she has ever written and performed. I saw her live at the BlackRock Center for the Arts in Germantown, MD, just outside of DC around the year 2003 and she was just amazing as a soloist. I just recently told my daughter I want this song played at my funeral. The musician in me wants to take this song with me into eternity when the time comes.

Janis and I were born the same year and I have Always been ever so grateful for her gifts she shared/shares with all us. Ms Ian can be compared to Dylan in that her lyrics easily "stand alone as poetry" but Janis's music is incredibly beautiful. Always my superstar.

When I was a little kid, my Dad had a boat he named The Teresa, after my little sister. On weekends he and my Mom would load me, my brother's and my sister into his jalopy and drive up to the Whitestone Bridge Boatyard in The Bronx, from Brooklyn so he could work on his boat. I remember us kids playing among the other boats. The smell of tar and lumber. My Dad loved his boat. And she was beautiful. As time goes by and I get older I remember those days. This song by Janis captures the beauty and simplicity of those times.

I first heard this song on a late night radio station in scotland i was 14yrs by the end of the song i was crying this song touched me so much, i'm 48yrs now and it still has that effect on me, beautiful words put together bitter sweet and the haunting sound of the guitar, i went out the following day and bought the album Stars and its my pride and joy. Only one other artist has that effect on me the legend that is Janis Joplin, this music touches youre heart like no other, i salute you Janis Ian youre avid fan.

This was the first song that Janis sang after she walked on stage to open her concert with in Philadelphia last year when I saw her. When I looked at her and she started to sing, I instantly fell in love with her. At the end of the concert, she and I met in person. The two of us are now friends. Her voice is so soothing to listen to. I hope to sing with this talented woman on stage someday! She is the best!

Knowing and loving Janis' rare gift of crafting lyrics that are often so subtle, seemingly indirect, but "spot on target"... I'm not so sure this song is about boats. She is a miracle worker in our times.....

David Gardiner I think both the Song and the collage are beautiful . I think any artist will admit , that the interpretation of the listener is every bit as important as the words conveyed . The goal of beautiful music and song is to touch ones spirit . the script is secondary .Embrace goodness in any way... and you defeat negativity . . Well done Mr Gardiner .

Janis ian's song is talking to me from the heart...she awakens in me something beyond what we comprehend..beyond logic...her songs whispers to me of betrayal, of madness, of sadness, sorrow, partiality...of joy,,, of love!!!...of being alone-scared and helpless...of courage....I gather strength in each word spoken and each lyrics sung...yet, I am reminded of the very sorrow I felt...of each tear I shed...I rejoice...I wallow in self pity...I praise---all these and more when janis crokns her songs!....would love to meet her.

No other singer moves me the way Janis Ian does. I've heard this song before - but it's touching a nerve right now, and off I go.... It was the same when my dad died. He'd been ill for years, and when he finally died I was really sad, but the tears just wouldn't come. Then I heard "When Angels Cry" and that was it. This woman has probably saved me a small fortune in therapy. A true artist and a wonderful human being.

Oh I love this song, have done for many years... cheers for whacking it up here. Love all Ms Ian does..... what a songwriter, and what a singer. I remember seeing JI in Sydney at a small venue maybe 8 years ago, she did all her wondrous classics... this album (God & the FBI) had recently come out and I'd had it on steady rotation at home, particularly this song. At the gig I hollered for her to do it, but alas, she would not... I think it was too new at the time. It's become a classic to me.

David, thanks for putting this on here. This sounds as if it is Live. I searched the net and realized that I have the studio version of this song. This is from the CD God and the FBI. I saw Janis 8 times, 7 times in the 80s, and once in SF in the 90s, when I finally met her backstage and got her autograph. She sent me a copy of her LP Live in Australia and Japan (1979 or so) with her autograph. I still have that. Janis rocks. Her voice is full of emotion, sentiment, sorrow, kindness, and love.

some of her songs was about sort of, how she felt not so beautiful, or seventeen..and societys child, you know sort of those rejected or marginalized..i think the irony when she writes and sings a song like this and others, she becomes very very beautiful...so her beauty comes from within that then comes on outside...

@nmacmedia I am a huge fan too, though like you I've only seen her live once (Cambridge Folk Festival, 1991 I think). You should visit her website at Janisian dot com. Re not doing the song you requested, if a song hasn't been planned and rehearsed it's very difficult to just add it in to a concert. There are other musicians, technicians etc. involved as well as just Janis. I'm sure she would have done it if she possibly could. There's no other singer I know of that tries so hard to oblige.
