..never been a better song about teenage angst, the cult of popularity and the consequentlal social and mental issues as you move from into adulthood. Perfect songwriting and underrated delivery..

Ironically, I don't think I've ever seen a lovelier face than Janis' at the time this performance was done. She may have been an awkward funny-looking teen, but she grew into a strikingly pretty lady. I had a friend who used to work for Janis back around 25-30 years ago, and I got to meet Janis and talk with her on a few occasions. A very gracious lady, and super talented. Now my friend is gone, and I can't hear Janis' music without my dear departed friend coming to mind. RIP Tina.

That's another observation that sometimes the so-called "ugly" ones grow up to be beautiful, and in Janis' case, famous. Then they have to deal with their new social advantage that others still don't have and see what it's like to be part of the accepted club. Maybe they will realize that the beauty queens from the past were just trying to fit in like everyone else. This song is such a beautiful reminder of what it's like to be an social outcast that so many of us experience.

I feel you, at 54 now I hear this song again and think that I loved the melody on the radio, but I haven’t actually listen to the words until now. It makes me tear up to think of how I felt at that age compared to what she experienced. When this recording came out I was 10 years old and I had yet to become 17. And when I did become 17 I was a geek and an outcast in that way but all us geeks hung out together so I did have flowers and valentines and I did have a boy actually see me. I wish Janis had had that too but her pain allowed us to experience her story. I am glad for the beautiful song and the beautiful woman she became. I wonder what she would think of these young kids today listening and reacting to her and feeling what it was like. I wonder would she be famous today?

At the age of 14, Ian wrote and recorded her first hit single, "Society's Child (Baby I've Been Thinking)", about an interracial romance forbidden by a girl's mother and frowned upon by her peers and teachers. It was released three times from 1965 to 1967, "Society's Child" became a national hit upon its third release

Very insightful analysis, so perceptive in your beautiful African accent speaking English. One of the cool things about the performance is how they orchestrated the dynamics (loud to soft, by using solo & full accompaniment. She started just voice & her guitar, the band came in on 2nd verse, into the bridge to guitar solo, like climax, then band fades for last verse, & on last bridge they come back in & finish. Very effective. Great reaction! 👍🏾

A perfect example of what music should embodie. I was little when this 1st came out and i remember hearing it in the car on a.m. radio, WLS Chicago and its power grabbed me and made me listen to it very very closely. Her, james Taylor, Carly Simon Gordon lightfoot, cat stevens Neil young just to name a few of the greatest song writers of the 60's and 70s. Music with song and emotion, exactly what music is and should be and not just some catchy chorus that means nothing. A story, a true life exsperience, a life lesson of love and heartbreak ect.. ect.. thats why the 70s and some of the 80's music stands the test of time. They were signed b6 record labels for their incredible talent, not because they looked a certain way. That came later and thats what helped destroy the music industry. Look like this, sound like that, ya but sing about this... corporate garbage. Basically whats been out now for the last 40 years now, corporate bubble gum packaged garbage by someone with no talent 5hat cant play an instrument let alone write a song. There's areason the few that lasted the test of time, and their music still plays and is loved by many walks of life. Anyways..... this is real true talent right here we just saw and herd. Perfection!👍 great choice.

I've only heard it playing in the background before but there was always something special about it that I resonated with. Some kind of sweet feeling, hard to describe. The original hit recording has a much more clear and enjoyable beat and rhythm so I suggest you listen to it. I hope this link enters properly here. "kzbin.info/www/bejne/in-6ZqmClLx-pc0"
