“Society’s child” is a song she wrote when she was only 15. It’s an amazing song and well worth listening to. Janis is one of the best singer/ songwriter and fantastic guitar player. She has many beautiful songs but unfortunately has not been very popular in the US. @@MrRondonmon As we outgrow those years we can look back and understand, but unless others tell us at that time that those negative thoughts are untrue, it may take many years to come until we understand them. Seventeen and Society's Child, both written by Janis in her youth, opened the eyes of many about what they were experiencing and/or what others around them were seeing in their mirrors or the mirror of life that was reflecting on them.
@MrRondonmon3 жыл бұрын
@@Dowdye47 Notice didn't say that the thoughts/feelings weren't a real sentiment, I stated they were untruthful in nature. I bet someone could ask her now and she would say those feelings were misperceptions b her, but they were still there, of course, but she now knows other women shouldn't be allowed to dictate how you feel about your own self-worth. But at 17, what do we know? Right? My fav artist from 1970 to 2000 was Elton John and my fav. artist since 2000 has been Ryan Adams so I understand dark and foreboding musings by artists, I just stated, as you probably agree with, its not a true statement f face, the other girls were not sitting around trying to be better than thou and she of course wasn't an ugly duckling. It's a spiritual battle, most people don't understand depression at all. Its about concepts more sp than a physiological feeling, we can be shattered as yuth by those people who surround us. They can instill self-worth, or make us "FEEL" unworthy by berating us, etc., etc. It really is all about the "environment" one is raised in.

I've been around since the 1950's, and the one constant I have seen is that very pretty girls often tend to believe they are better, and deserve better, than other girls. They don't, of course, as looks are not something you earn, but rather something you are given through a genetic crap-shoot. Spare me the gorgeous girls who go through life with a high maintenance, bitchy attitude. Give me a girl who is willing to cook a meal and clean the house.

This song always makes it cry. It has a gentle force to it that moves through you right to your very soul. With honest soft lyrics which embodies such emotions. A song that resonates with many women, young and old. That feeling of not belonging and feeling left out to experience love and kindness. I have always treasured this song. It's message is raw and harsh, yet sung so clearly but gentle. Janis is a beautiful soul. Much more wise than her age when she wrote it. It is also ironic, as she didn't see how beautiful she really was....that she was not good enough. But she was, in fact, beautiful, soft, and gentle. I hope she was able to find what she wanted back then....in a time where to be out was a huge huge taboo. To find a partner who loved her, just as she was and for who she was. Beautiful song ❤

A wonderful opportunity to express my appreciation for Janis arose as we crossed paths in Central Park, I think it was June 1977, right around 57th and Central Park West. I was entering and she was leaving the park, and as she started to pass, she gave me the sweetest little almost-imperceptible smile. I almost blurted out, "Janis!" but I caught myself and thought it best to keep cool. However, I couldn't contain my mouth from following suit and instead blurted, "You're a knockout to me, Janis." I heard her giggle oh-so slightly as our two ships passed. Funny how you never forget what would ordinarily seem--at the time--insignificant...but if I somehow made her day, well, at least she learned what I considered to be "the truth." She definitely made MY day, each time I played her cassette tape (!) with "At 17" on it.

Janis has great lyrics. Thank you for doing this. I must have heard this song a hundred times growing up. You should read her book.

So much to learn from the past to be better as a new generation. I’m glad you are appreciating the beauty of the past.

I cry every time I hear this song. Fourty years + later, and that pain is still there. It never goes away. An "ugly duckling" is a child who blossoms late, who becomes beautiful later on. It's from Hans Christian Andersen's story of a little bird whom everything thought was a duckling, but was really a cygnet, a baby swan. They're scruffy when they're little but become gorgeous when they grow up. Here's Danny Kaye singing the story: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e53KaXh4ftdloKM :)

Well I heard this song as a youngster and have never 4gotten it or this great lass that gave it 2 people everywhere ! Unfortunately I never met her but know well enough how grounded and ordinary she made herself look ! Something that says everything about her ! Brilliant is how I see her she's stood the test of time like her music has !!!!

I have always loved this song, she has such a beautiful voice, and so many girls can relate to that song. I have known some beautiful girls that thought they were ugly. It's sad but that mirror can be your worst enemy.
