“I met a girl who sang the blues, And I asked her for some happy news, But she just smiled and turned away…” Janis was brilliant.

She died within two weeks of Jimi Hendrix. It was quite a gut punch then and still is. Jimi died September 18 and Janis on. October 4, 1970.

"Freedom is just another word for nothin' left to lose"..."I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one single yesterday". Kris Kristofferson, those lyrics are incredible. Thanks for giving this to Janis. It's become a gift to us all.

She wrote about 1/4-1/3 of the songs she sang. But I'd say EVERY song JJ recorded, she made her own. Very few singers have the guts to record something she sang.

You should check out Joplin/Big Brother's live performance of "Ball and Chain" from the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. Even has Mama Cass' (of the Mommas and Papas, concert organizers) mouth hanging open

Yes Kris Kristofferson wrote this song. Like a lot of songs they are done so well it becomes their song. Like this one same thing with Johnny Cash "Hurt", And Frank Sinatra singing " My way"✌️❤️

Kris Kristofferson wrote this song and named it after a Secretary that worked in their office, by the name of Barbara McGee, but she asked Kris to please change the name cause her husband was very jealous and wouldn’t appreciate her name being connected to this song. Soooo, Bobby McGee was really a woman, but Janis made it her own. Janis died (a couple of weeks) before the song was released on her “Pearl” album to the public. She never got to see the Adoration for this song. She would sometimes come down to San José, Ca. to Jam at our local “Be-Ins”, just 45 Mi. South of S.F. I saw her at the Fairgrounds for $3.50 and she comes out on Stage with her Neon Pink feather Boa and a bottle of Southern Comfort in her hand and destroyed! What an Honor and a Pleasure to have seen her in Concert at least 8 times in my life….. SanJoséBob

Kris Kristofferson isn't just "another dude" who sang the original. He's the living legend songwriter who WROTE "Me and Bobby McGee" and dozens of other songs that are now classics in the world of Country music. The story of how, as a struggling young songwriter, Kris flew a helicopter onto Johnny Cash's property in order to get Cash to listen to a cassette demo of his song "Sunday Morning Coming Down" is as legendary and the man himself. And the story of how Janis Joplin ended up with the song is another great tale. Check it out.
