Kris Kristofferson wrote this song and named it after a Secretary that worked in their office, by the name of Barbara McGee, but she asked Kris to please change the name cause her husband was very jealous and wouldn’t appreciate her name being connected to this song. Soooo, Bobby McGee was really a woman, but Janis made it her own. Janis died (a couple of weeks) before the song was released on her “Pearl” album to the public. She never got to see the Adoration for this song. She would sometimes come down to San José, Ca. to Jam at our local “Be-Ins”, just 45 Mi. South of S.F. I saw her at the Fairgrounds for $3.50 and she comes out on Stage with her Neon Pink feather Boa and a bottle of Southern Comfort in her hand and destroyed! What an Honor and a Pleasure to have seen her in Concert at least 8 times in my life….. SanJoséBob

Kris Kristofferson isn't just "another dude" who sang the original. He's the living legend songwriter who WROTE "Me and Bobby McGee" and dozens of other songs that are now classics in the world of Country music. The story of how, as a struggling young songwriter, Kris flew a helicopter onto Johnny Cash's property in order to get Cash to listen to a cassette demo of his song "Sunday Morning Coming Down" is as legendary and the man himself.
