I'm 71 and have seen more than 100 live music performances since 1968. Saw Janis twice in1969. No performer ever came close to Janis for energy and magic on stage! She put her whole being into it - voice, body, heart, and soul. I'm still in love with Janis and miss her.

I won't begrudge her that, but Grace Slick was famous before Janis. White Rabbit was on the charts before Janis performed at Monterrey. First actual Rock and Roll star was probably Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Predates even Chuck Berry. Bigger in England due to American radio segregation in the 50's

Janis is a force and a one of a kind. San Francisco produced both of the two earliest female rock stars. Janis and Grace Slick came onto their own within a couple of months of one another.

One of the last things she recorded before her death. Written by the legendary Kris Kristofferson. He & Janis had a brief relationship in the 60's & remained friends thereafter. When he heard this, right after her passing, he cried & said "Its her song now". Even now he still gets emotional when speaking of her. Btw, back in the 90's I was fortunate to meet Mr. Kristofferson..very gentlemanly & down to earth. And so soft spoken in that unmistakable voice. Take a minute to Google him & his astounding life. One of the best songwriters of the 20th century, Rhodes Scholar, helicopter pilot & Army Captain...gave up teaching English Literature at West Point to go to Nashville & get into music...took a job as a janitor in a recording studio to start & ended up of one of the Outlaw Country pioneers along with Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson & Waylon Jennings. One of the most respected artists in any music genre. Oh, & a movie star too. Been in many movies & starred with Barbra Streisand in "A Star Is Born", one of the biggest hits of the 70's. @@deborahcornell171 I have an excellent Highwaymen DVD where Kris goes into detail about how he met Johnny Cash in the studio. The studio manager didn't like Kris, and tried to keep him away from JC. But Johnny told the manager if Kris wasn't there then he wouldn't be recording there. The manager relented (hated Kris). Johnny and him became great friends after Kris landed the helicopter on his front yard. I have a similar DVD with the Highwaymen that does not contain that information. The one with this snippet is from Europe and won't play on my North American DVD player. But it does play on my PC. Take care.

This is from her later band, Full Tilt Boogie Band. Her earlier band was called Big Brother and the Holding Company. This song is so iconic for her. People would just spontaneously start singing this together all the time when I was younger. It was everywhere. And I certainly wouldn't want you to miss out on the way that she sings when she's pulled back - it's absolutely lovely and the words are incredible. That line about the windshield wipers slappin time while they play the acoustic guitar and just passed the time singing the blues - all of that just fit so perfectly. But you guys, you have to check out the studio recording of her George Gershwin cover with Big Brother and the Holding Company, Summertime. To me it's one of her greatest recordings. There is stuff that she's doing with her voice and raspy overtones that she harmonizes with herself at the end? It's mind-blowing. And it's a great vibe and everything about it kicks ass. It's really pulled back but it has so much pain and soul in it. It is totally next level.

Janis rocks! "Me and Bobby McGee" was a number one hit in the U.S. for Janis Joplin in 1971 but she died before it was released so she didn't get to enjoy its success. For that it pairs well with "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding from 1967, the first ever posthumous single to top the charts in the U.S. Macabre references aside, Joplin and Redding tore it up at the legendary Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, along with Jimi Hendrix and The Who.

This was a big hit for her on the radio. Many of her songs that we love so much now never were that big on the radio, as I recall. Radio play was key for 45 RPM sales and contributed to LP sales. Remember, this was AM radio then. This song was on the radio a lot.

Janis died in October 1970 just a few days after recording this song for her album "Pearl" - it was released in January 1971, as was the album - "Me and Bobby McGee" was her only #1 charting single. There was one song on the album which she hadn't yet recorded the vocal, the backing track was included on the album as an instrumental.

Long backstory on this. This was the first popular pop song written by a man (Kris Kristofferson) from a woman's point of view. At the time Kristofferson and Janis Joplin were lovers and Kristofferson has called her the love of his life. At the time she recorded this he had no idea and they were on separate coasts. They talked by phone that evening after she recorded and she said she had a surprise present for him (I think it may have been his birthday?) when she got back (the surprise was the song). He woke up in the morning to the news of her death and was crushed. I think it was a month or so later that he found out what the surprise present was when this song was released and hit the airwaves. He has been married since, but he never got over her.

Kristofferson didn't cry because Janet turned his song into a hit. He first heard the song before it was released. That was two days after Janis Joplin died of an overdose. She was a friend. He wasn't aware she recorded the song. He was taken to the studio by one of her bandmates I believe. And had it played for Kris. Hearing this great rendition of his song by his departed friend hit him like a ton of bricks.

Beth, a two time winner of "Best Blues Female Vocalist", will draw you into her performance not just with here technically flawless vocals but also with her incredibly mesmerizing voice & her rich story telling ability makes you believe & feel every word that she sings. Joe, who started his career at the age of 12 opening for BB King is one of the premiere guitarists in the music industry. For me his guitar work in this performance was more than just exceptional as he took a simple melodic scale & made his vintage mid 60s Fender Telecaster "SING" with intense emotion while the beat of the drummer (Anton Fig) pushed Joe's skill to an unbelievable level. After his solo, in the background, you can see Joe give Anton a nod of appreciation. None of these musicians are slouches, Anton Fig Is a session drummer having worked with Kiss, Bob Dylan, Peter Frampton, Billy Squire, Cyndi Lauper & more.

So glad you're diving into her studio work. One that was widely disparaged at it's release is the Kosmic Blues album. It was made at a time when there was a major blues influx to rock and incorporated a brass band. The Kosmic Blues Band is the group that performed with her at Woodstock. I would love to hear your take on (in my opinion) the incredible I Got Dem Ol Kosmic Blues Again Mama album. My personal favorite is As Good As You've Been To This World. It's one rockin' piece of music. Thanks for keeping the music alive guys.

Kris kristofferson wrote Bobby McGee .he was a struggling song writer ,his release of the song did not do well . as Kris tells it “he met Bob Dylan at a party ,bob loved the song and suggested that Janis Joplin would bring the song “Dylan thought “some respectable numbers some rasp some soul and so as you just heard in that reaction,that happened . Janis recorded the song as a surprise for kris after having met Kris with Dylan’s intro .Janis hit it off with kris in a flirtatious way “kris was a good looking guy .but Janis overdosed before she presented the song to him recorded her surprise taken by her death. This was seen in a documentary I watched with kris holding back tears ,as he explained that the song went to number one on the charts only the second time in history going to number one posthumously .So Janis’s gift to kris of his song was something that broke his and Dylan’s hearts .kris said that soon the song was everywhere recorded by country and folk and rock artists and kris for many years could not listen to the song without tears .

Beth Hart is a huge talent. I prefer any song over Paradiso- at least do not watch as a first introduction to Beth. You should know about her life and such first that Lead her to one magnificent song writer and vocalist. She has done a cover album of Led Zeppelin that is awsome.

I remember seeing her on Star Search many years ago, and thought she was on her way but lost track of her after that. Was reintroduced to her about 5 years ago, and read about her downfall. I'm really glad she pulled herself out of the hell hole she was in. What a success story! ❤
