This is a talent competition. He shouldn't win because he represents something people identify with--a common man pursuing his dream. That's admirable but that's not what's at stake here. All the contestants personalities are a part of their 'act', but in the end it's about talent and skill. Richard is a good singer but nowhere nearly as good as others in this season. His story isn't the talent we're supposed to be voting for.

It’s not just the fact that he’s a Janitor for 23 years up to this point. Not just the fact that he’s a typical guy living a completely normal life, it’s the fact that HE CAN SING THE WAY THAT HE DOES, despite being 55 Years old. To me, that’s the Most IMPRESSIVE part. It shows the Pure Talent in his Voice. This man deserves all the Praise that he gets, and is an inspiration to a lot of people out there.

Richard was a janitor in my town! My husband and I helped with our churches youth group, and the kids would talk about "the singing janitor" who had a fabulous voice. He's sing as he'd clean down the halls. So neat to be able to see him on this stage now!!

In my eyes he's the winner already!! No matter what the votes say, I believe after watching the show he won! That being said, that doesn't mean that America always gets it right when voting. Especially if there's an act that's very popular because they get a ton of people to call in for them. But as I said he's always a winner in my eyes and I'm sure after reading all these comments many others feel the same way too!!

There's a reason they didn't get to the final, practicing professionals never win. Same as Puff the dragon costumed magician or Tapeface, whenever they have a huge dancing troupe or choir, or when they had Loren Allred singing the Greatest Showman song twice, (on the British AND American versions!) when she was the original singer of the song in the film. They're not actually in the running to get to the finals, they're there to put a few professional acts into the mix and promote the artists. The whole point of the show is to find talent from ordinary people who don't do the things as their regular dayjob. There's a difference between polish and passion. Richard may not be as fully trained or sound quite as good, but his heart goes into it and you can hear it... there's a rawness that the overly trained performers that have done it a thousand times don't have anymore, and that's what the audience is responding to, along with his personality.
