The Lonely Scavenger

I went to my off grid cabin despite the extreme cold weather.Hakf the chore is getting out there. Everything is more difficult and exhausting in these frigid conditions. I only have a few free days to visit my cabin before I go back to work and we just happen to be in a cold snap. I brought the last of my supplies on a Homemade sled and began to cut firewood. In these extreme conditions firewood is a must. I made a few improvements to my cabin such as hanging curtains over the door to keep the draft out. I also cooked a delicious dinner, played free cell, read my book and smoked a pipe with a whiskey drink. I always feed my chickadee friends and leave a bit of leftovers for the rest of the forest creatures.

They have some small saws 6/8 inch Amazon. Came with 2 little charges. They work good and the charge stays pretty darn good. Just not sure with that freezing cold. 🥶 I have 26 dwarf bottlebrush with shears it could take 20 + minutes each to prune. With the little saw 5 minutes each at the most. Just thought I run it past you. Of course, you sawing branches warms you up good.

@@Lalunabreeze Thanks! Yes I have thought about an 8" cordless chainsaw. Maybe one day when I can afford it. The battery might not last long in the cold possibly 🙂

Whenever I'd complain about the cold my Pop would tell me that the heat is in the work, and he'd send me out to cut and split wood. Cut enough wood until you think you have enough and then cut as much as you did the first go around. Then keep quiet about being cold again. Ha, Ha, Ha. Thanks for bringing back fond memories from my good old days.

Tip: a metal pail filled with rocks set on your stove can be a great source of continued heat long after the fire goes out , on cold nights can be placed under the bed to warm it .. ( heat outside the first few times as heated rocks can explode do not use river or creek rocks )
@Thelonelyscavenger
@Thelonelyscavenger 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Bill! There are only creek rocks around and usually frozen or buried in the snow. Having "extreme " in the title helps attract more views. I know several people from northern Ontario and it sounds like a rough place but they are tough folk. Thanks for watching 🙏👍💛✌

@@Thelonelyscavenger you can use the creek rocks inside eventually course gravels can also be used something to plan for over warmer months .. I would use them around an outdoor fire a fair number of times before utilizing for indoors. I like the tip mentioned about utilizing old fire hose as weather strips 👍 Keep up the good work and enjoy your outdoors .. 👍

Hey bud , not one to dive into your business , noticed you bearing down on your bow saw , a no-no from experience . Saw one handed and let the weight move your saw down the log . Putting weight on your saw will not only dull it quicker but will also warp your saw blade rendering it pretty much useless . Grew up using a bow saw to saw all our wood ( up to 8 cords a winter ) and if we were careful we could cut 2 cords of wood per saw blade . Just saying ....
@Thelonelyscavenger

I have no problem taking advice from someone who has experience like yourself. Normally I don't push down on a saw that hard, I guess I was getting cold. Thank you for your feedback 🍻👍💛✌🙏

Silly question but if you split the log's in the cabin would the noise not drive off a weasel if he takes up residence underneath it?
@Thelonelyscavenger
@Thelonelyscavenger Ай бұрын
That's a good question. I don't normally split wood inside except when it's really cold. But yes it probably would annoy the weasel. Thanks for the question 🙂✌️

Man, that was crazy cold. Do you keep making changes based on your experiences, I always do. For what I can see, I would create a bigger place for the wood pile, I would use a metal wedge and axe together for splitting wood and keep it at the cabin. a bigger wood saw would help, I would store Thermos food and liquid containers in that cabin to keep the food and drinks hot longer, I would also keep cigarette lighter fluid around the cabin to start your fire faster. I would plug all of the gaps initially. I would use canvass tarps for window and door covers. You have to keep an eye on the snow on top of your tent. I know that you did not sleep longer than two hours in those conditions, if you slept there. Things are safer and better when shared; it doesn't take long to die under those conditions. If you sleep too long or get injured, you'll perish. Just personal preferences, keep safe.

Thanks for the advice and suggestions. Yes I'm always making improvements at the cabin: 4 foot saw, bigger stove, interior and exterior finished. I have many cabin videos and here is a newer one kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaTCqayIl9eEiqssi=5bTzmBvPsES0MeiN

Appreciate the video. Best wishes for your surgery. I believe your cabin would feel warmer if your stove wasn’t so high off the floor. This is why it’s so cold when you are sitting on the floor chopping wood. Probably your feet stay very cold.

A catalytic oxidizer on the output of the wood stove inside the structure will recover 95+% of the heat value of the smoke particles which are combusted in the in the add-on oxidizer. improving the overall heat/fuel efficiency of the stove on the order of about 25%

Thanks for the response I thought it was either chicken necks or some type of pork. Sharing something interesting with you, I visit my sister in Calgary Alberta Canada in 1989 and it was -45 degrees below zero and my sister told me not to breathe the air directly which I did and it felt like needles in my lungs lol 😮☺️. I experienced single-digit temperatures before in Dallas where I grew up but Calgary weather absolutely shocked me. Again thank you for a very enjoyable and realistic video 🙏.
