You are a godsend. To me it makes no sense that there are still no commercially available Janko MIDI Controllers. Mods like these are the only ways to get one.

I disassembled my keystep 37 and found that there are 2 types of springs used. Its also visible in your video around 8:32 where you first take off 2 silver springs and then a black spring, The black spring is for the black keys and it is weaker then the silver spring. I assume this is like this to allow the original white keys and the black keys to be pressed down at the tip and have the same pressure against your finger even though the black key has a smaller lever compared to the white key when the black key is pressed down at its front vs the white key at its front. Now with the janko key arrangement you end up with some of the longer keys working against the black springs and the shorter ones against the silver ones and vice versa. Have you tried reordering the black and silver springs or maybe ordering extra silver springs to mitigate this?

Just found this video, this is what i was dreaming of!!! Really would love to be able to do this onto another keyboard or even actual piano! Unfortunately no clue of 3d print or 3d modelling (yet) but this is so inspiring!! @toms jensen what is up my dude? Any news, did you move your newsfeed to another channel or site? Please do let me and us know!

Why do you think this keyboard layout isn't more widely adopted. ie why aren't all pianos like this?
@tomsjensen40194 жыл бұрын
I think the music industry as a whole tends to have a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality. For most use cases piano works just fine, thus people aren't compelled to pursue new/different ideas.

Would this keyboard be easier to use when composing with microtones?
@tomsjensen40194 жыл бұрын
Most likely not, it doesn't give your keyboard any additional capabilities over a regular keyboard (including additional notes).
@Persun_McPersonson3 жыл бұрын
No, you'd need a Lumatone (Terpstra generalized layout) for that; unfortunately, it only has a really expensive version due to how niche of a product it is. Hopefully microtonal music gains more traction before we die so they can make more-affordable versions.

Will your Janko keys fit the Arturia KeyLab Essential 88 88-key Keyboard Controller. I've been trying to find a solution to make a Janko keyboard mod for it. I'm also intrigued by the Janko setups that place 3 Janko keys over the first key and two over next key. Giving the finished Janko keyboard 6 rows. It also looks like your design can easily offer a change from those hexagons caps to the pill-shaped squared or flat squared Janko buttons that I've seen on other Jankos. There's a whole community that could be built around what you're doing with this. Keep at it. I want to mod all of my keyboards to be fully Janko. It's better. It really is. God Bless

no, different size keys. the 88 essential has full size keys and the keylab has minikeys.

Cool project! It seems unique that you use keycaps but not mechanical-keyboard switches. The OnShape link is "view only" though. Could you please post a downloadable file? Thanks!

About how much should the printing cost in material? I don’t have a printer, and am curious how expensive this should be if I find someone to print for me (either a friend or a company)
@tomboblombo4 жыл бұрын
Each spool costs ~$20, and I'm using 3 different spools for 3 different colors. The whole project probably only uses 1/10th to 1/5th of a spool though, so raw material cost is probably only $4. Hope that helps!

I'd like to modify this a little to make it easier and quicker to print. However the onshape link says the design is "view only", so I can't modify or export the design. Any thoughts?
@tomsjensen40195 жыл бұрын
Hey! The original document is 'view only' so people can't just go modifying the original willy-nilly. If you'd like to make modifications, you should be able to copy the document. Happy modding!

Great project! I'm printing it now. In the slicer the key imports at an odd angle. is that on purpose to align the grain a certain way?
@tomboblombo5 жыл бұрын
No, it's completely incendental. I'd reccomend printing the keys on their side for the most strength. Good luck printing!

@tomboblombo3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I've never owned one, so I can't say for certain. However I think it's quite likely that Arturia would decide to use the same key molds between products.

Hi, here I am again, really tempted to go for it and buy my own printer and a keystep... But before I do so would you tell us how you're getting on with Janko V2 keyboard project ? Which keyboard wil it be based upon ? Do you plan to make the 3d files available for that one a well ?
@tomboblombo4 жыл бұрын
Hello! Unfortunately I haven't found the time to continue working on the project, so no promises as to if/when it will be complete. The next version is intended to be a completely standalone version, so no base keyboard. I'd most likely release the project as open source upon completion.

I've seen other Janko keyboards where the front row is a bit lower than the row behind it, like stairs. Is it a personal preference not to do that? Or is it technically impossible when modding this keyboard?
@tomboblombo5 жыл бұрын
Well, I wanted it to still have a relatively compact form factor, and a flat design was the easiest way to accomplish that. In reality though, that flat design is something I'm going to be addressing in Janko project v2, as it makes it difficult to hit keys in the second row with your thumb.

1, I planned to learn piano, but I hate training the different fingering only for different tone. I keep waiting for something like this to be available on amazon or somewhere else. 2, I do believe the electronic piano manufacturers should pay attention on this. 7-5 layout works only great for C major. 3, I have no idea but I feel the 4line layout is the best. According to my intuition, you shouldn't print the key caps like hexagon. They should be the same shape as the traditional key, rectangle, long enough. Coloring is definite a good idea.
@paulvonjankozuehren50373 жыл бұрын
check out the real acoustic Janko patents and Janko pianos on my channel here on youtube. Janko made the best proportions out of several reasons. Some of them I explain on short videos when playing an acoustic Janko in a museum in stuttgart. Just click on "videos" and you will see them. Coloring is best managed with rechangeable paperstrips which could be stuck at libitum behind round seethrough surfaces of the keycaps. On the video: "Janko piano: korsakov, Bach-Theme, Graul etc." you only see the best form, but there they are not transparent and hollow, so you can´t change colors when-and however you´d like. That´s an idea of Peter Zettel (and not of Reinert, whose construction won´t work for long according to testimonies of experts in court.)

Time. Haha. Simple as that. I found out that producing KZbin content takes up just as much, if not more, time as the project does. Not to say that I never plan on making additional content, but it probably won't be as often as I hoped. (I also need to finish the project).
