He started landing 10 metres above the ground. He could jump at least 15 m more, but Planica simply wasn't made for jumps that long at the time. He would've landed on flat ground and would surely die. This way he only hurt his lower back. Big respect, still!

This was the best ski jumping competition ever btw. Record after record broken on same weekend or even same day. Amazing jumps . Events like these happen only every 50 yrs.

he was too high up in the air. Björn Einar Romoeren was lower, he could fly out his jump until the very end, Janne Ahonen couldn't. he easily could have touched down way past 240 meters, but he had to open up the jump when he was over five meters up in the air and stood no chance at landing this giant jump. I remember that the atmosphere in Planica was a gigantic party, especially after Romoeren's world record. but four minutes later it was followed by a dismal silence. after this fall, the competition wasn't the same anymore.
