I'm a devout Protestant, but I always find AMs takes on religious (Catholic) history fascinating.

Finally Jansenism clearly explained. The full name of Cornelius Jansen was Cornelius Jansen van Ackoy. Jansen is a patronymic. I am a direct descendant of his brother Willem Jansen van Ackoy. My ancestor Adriaan van Rijswijck married the daughter of Willem, namely Marieke van Ackoy. Ackoy is a village in the Betuwe region of the Netherlands. It is "famous" for its tower that is as crooked as Pisa's. Just for fun.

My background as a Methodist child and a Quaker in college and a convert to Catholicism and 3rd order Franciscan in 1973 has covered the waterfront. I love Alphonsus Liguouri and read his moral theology some. Basically my faith is 10% good deeds, 10% prayer and 80% being a good sport while Jesus saves me through life experiences. I'm a Sacred Heart soul all the way. The Sacred Heart prayer groups and the Montfort Mary groups were horrible targets of the terror. I learned that from, of all people, dear Bill Cooper and his Babylon series. My husband's doctor was a lay Jesuit with a brother in Georgetown as a priest (The mothership in the US). The doc was very kind to his very poor, mostly black, patients. He told them all what was going on in January 2020 and used his office as an emergency breathing help so they wouldn't go to hospital. God bless all here! Merry Christmas!

St. Alphonsus de Liguori is an interesting Doctor on these points. He situates the truths regarding grace and freewill against the Calvinists but also openly disagrees with both the strict Augustinian and Thomistic dismissals of the biblical texts regarding the universal salvific will of God without thereby falling into pelagian universalist errors wherein all will invariably be saved

@@heofnorenown what is? The condition in which god can punish you? Cause otherwise it’s nothing you have any relationship to or control over unless you are Buddhist. We have already proven people have far less free will than we generally like to think scientifically - where do you imagine a soul or a just god fits into that equation and reality? And regardless the sins and your awareness of them and their effects are still finite, and the punishments are still infinite. You can’t kill a soul, you can’t even see one but god can damn you for killing a body? How’s that just? Frankly even the notion that something all powerful even has the appropriate perspective to judge us from anything but an all merciful mien is ludicrous.

I really want to hear a good podcast on the molinist vs thomistic view on predestination. Both are acceptable positions to hold and molinism seems to make the most sense to me.
@Pie_PellicaneАй бұрын
AM, are you aware of the Church's teaching on predestination? It is incorrect, without qualification, to say we don't believe in predestination. See the Catechism index entry, or do a word search of "predestine" in the Bible.
@harryw290327 күн бұрын
Yes, that would be incorrect. We don’t believe in “double-predestination”.
@franesustic98816 күн бұрын
Catholics believe in double predestination, if he claims we don't he's wrong. The difference between us and calvinists is that we disagree about free will and sufficient grace.

I’d say I am am a Jansenist…devout catholic, believer in the mass, don’t like papal authority, believe that only the elect get to heaven and that god actively condemns the non-elect to hell….so there u go Janesntism is alive
@ToffeeFelixАй бұрын
It depends, of course, what you mean by “God actively condemns the non-elect to hell”. Also, what do you mean by “don’t like papal authority”? If you mean you don’t like certain uses of papal authority then fine but it’d be wise to practice caution in talking about this in public. If you mean you don’t like the fact that the pope has the powers that he does, or that you don’t believe he has the powers he claims, then your issue is with God, not a good place to find yourself. Also, it’s not a good idea to say “I adhere to [a condemned heretical position]”, even if what you mean is “I accept certain true catholic doctrines which [a condemned heretical position] also accepts.
@sebastianbendyna2363Ай бұрын
@ I’m afraid I don’t believe the pope has the power or authority he claims. This pope is proof that papal infallibility is a bad joke. No one man can have the power he claims when he is unrepentant heretic. So yeah I openly reject the authority the pope claims. I would accept he has a primacy of honour only.

@sebastianbendyna2363 The fundamental issue is that of irresistible grace and people cannot lose their salvation (once saved, always saved). Both of these are condemned by the Catholic Church and rejected by most protestants.
