January 2023 Garmin G5 magnetometer data update procedure

The purpose of this video is to illustrate the update of the on-board software of Garmin G5 units, including the update of magnetometer data. This unit's magnetometer data expired at the end of December 2022. The video is uncut, unedited and it documents an unrehearsed procedure.

Contrary to Garmin instructions, it is NOT sufficient to plug the update SD card into the unit when the unit is on. It is necessary to reboot the unit with the update SD card already inserted and wait for the unit to detect the SD card and its update contents, and to present the prompt "Load software" on screen.
The update proceeds in two phases. During the first phase (1:14) the unit presents a "G5 boot block" screen with white on black text and after that, the unit reboots presenting a new version number.
The second phase proceeds asynchronously with the unit working normally, except for a "!" icon in the lower left corner (1:41) that leads to a "Software update in progress" message (1:46). The icon disappears when the update is complete.

Apologies to the one person who sent a question - I had a case of fat fingers and accident flagged your comment in KZbin Studio, and lost it forever. I think it was about having to update multiple G5s - yes, I believe you have to update both units. Please post your comment again.

Instructions say to do as you did. Turn it on and insert the MicroSD. Then you had to shutdown and turn on again to read the card. Guess it does not matter or are their instructions wrong. Hmmm

The instructions at the bottom of www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=10739 say insert after power is already on, but if you found better instructions elsewhere, please send me the link.
