January 2024 LitLand ~ My Punishment is a Really Popular Book Pick

Running just a smidge behind but I couldn't start the new year without a little bit of LitLand in my life. Come pick my January TBR (to-be-read) with me!

Current LitLand Rules
There are six colors tied to six different genres. Each card I pull advances me across the board and informs which genre I pick from to add to my To Be Read (TBR) pile for the month.
I pull four cards to advance across the board each month.
If I land on a dot, I have to pull a prompt from my Stuck Square cards; I also use these as punishment cards if I haven’t completed one of my books from a previous month. BUT I do allow rollovers, so I essentially give myself two months to get a book read, or else I have to take a punishment. Punishment pulls also don’t help me advance across the board.
If I pull a pink card with a book on it, I have to go to wherever the genre on the card takes me. I also have to pull a Challenge Card and complete that prompt.
There are also Troll Bridge cards, but I only pull those if I want to cross a bridge or if I land on a square with a rainbow sticker. I have to complete the prompt on that card within the month or I have to take a punishment.
There’s also the Monthly Troll, which is an optional challenge for you and me. I will pull a Troll Bridge card and if I succeed in whatever the challenge is, I can protect myself from punishment in the next month. You’re welcome to play along and take on this challenge with me, but no pressure.
At the end of LitLand I get to treat myself with a book haul...or something else high value for me. I'm figuring out what that is for next time.

I’m not a Reylo fan either. I ended up loving The Love Hypothesis, but I was a little disappointed with Love on the Brain.

I had no interest in The Love Hypothesis because of the hype. I really didn't think I would enjoy it. But I found it at a thriftstore, and it worked for a prompt on something I was participating in. I ended up really enjoying it. I hope you do as well along with the rest of your reads. Happy New Year.

Don't be scared because of Reylo - not much left. I didn't liked the book, was okay but not more. The writing was off for me. I'm not reading more of Hazelwood. But my colleague loves every book from her and had persuaded me to give it a try. I would be very interested in a review of the book from Laura Sebastian because I've read her other series and am curious if her other books are equally enjoyable.

I adore watching your game, thank you for doing it again! As a side note, I would watch a video with you explaining why you dislike Reylo (renlo? I think I was right the first time) because that is also my opinion but I don't know anyone else in real life who holds the same opinion.

Ahh thank you! I'm so glad to be back at it. I think the main reason I'm not a Reylo person is that's not my ship, moreover it feels like the movie itself tried to force it (bad Star Wars pun) in a way that bugged me. I don't have anything against folks who ship Reylo in general, I was just so frustrated that it felt like the movies did bad fan service. There's probably more to dig into there but those are the big reasons for me.

A Marvellous Light is a lot more of a romance than a smidgen. There are several on-page spicy scenes. It's also my most disappointing read of 2022... I thought I was going to love it. That blurb screams me so much so that I pre-ordered it. Alas, the writing did absolutely nothing for me and the previous mentioned spicy scenes involve a kink that I don't enjoy, which would've been fine if it hadn't weirdly become an important plot point. Honestly, I'm still kind of upset by how disappointed I was in it. It's not terrible but it really didn't work for me. I'm glad you said you had a coworker who raved about it because I didn't want to leave this comment that kind of feels like setting you up for failure even though I know we often have very different tastes.😅 On a happier note, I enjoyed Year of Yes. It's not groundbreaking or eye-opening, but it's a good time. Rhimes is funny and engaging.

That can be SO disappointing when the blurb doesn't match with your experience. Particularly when it comes down to kinks that might not land. We'll see how it goes for me, but I don't feel like you're setting me up for failure! ❤️ And I think Year of Yes will be a nice, fluffy bit of non-fiction. I'm expecting it to be more of a feel good moment because she's such a charismatic presence.
