ABOUT THE POET: Effie Waller Smith (January 6, 1879 - January 2, 1960) was an African-American poet born to former slaves on a farm in rural Kentucky. She published three volumes of poetry between 1904 and 1909, and her poetry appeared in Harper's Weekly and various regional newspapers. After completing eighth grade at a local school, Effie attended Kentucky Normal School for Colored Persons in Frankfort. From 1900 to 1902 she trained to be a teacher, and she taught school for several years in Kentucky and in Tennessee. (source: Wikipedia)
