But the fire broke out after the earthquake because of the ruptured gas pipelines has to be dealt with properly. In India cooking gas is distributed to each household individually and it can be closed with safety cap in case of emergency. Mostly Cooking gas never supplied to individual houses through pipeline which will greatly reduce the risk of fire after earthquake. Northern parts of India also suffers from severe earthquake occasionally but never faces the risk of fire after earthquake. Since Japan is prone to frequent natural disasters they have to distribute cooking gas to each and every household like in India.

When I was an English teacher at public schoosl in Japan, I had the opportunity to participate in several fire drills. The students and teachers were instructed to cover their heads with cushions, hide under their desks until the shaking stopped. To prevent panic or stampedes during evacuations, the rule was to "not push, not run, and not talk." Since they were trained this way from a young age, people in the footage at the supermarket appear to be very calm. Unfortunately, if this were to happen in this country, looting would likely occur. Well, even without natural disasters, flash mobs often raid stores around here.

well the early warning can only go so far... it is mainly to get emergency shut downs at critical infrastructures like high speed trains, powerplants, heavy industry etc... other important parts are the strict building codes, readiness of rescue forces and the awareness and education of the population

The early warning system has nothing to do with it. I am in Japan not far from Noto. Also, casualties will be over 100.
@AkamiChannel Жыл бұрын
Just to clarify, I am in Takaoka, Toyama. The early warning system went off about 1 second before we were hit by tremors. If you were on the Noto Peninsula there was probably no warning at all prior to the quake. Something sad I've discovered having been in Japan for 12 years is that for the big quakes you feel, there is basically no warning because the epicenter is close to you. However, for this quake I wish I had reacted immediately to the warning. We did not react because we likely thought it was for the smaller earthquake that had hit a minute prior. Still, it was only a second later that the big quake came. It would have made no difference in our situation. I will from now on be reacting quickly to every warning.

In 2011, some people didn't seek high ground soon enough, but, after seeing how devastating that was, I'm guessing more people will take tsunami warnings more seriously now(?).
definitely, that event in 2011 really hit hard... awareness has of course always been high in japan, large and devastating quakes have hit japan multiple times, ar least 2 even just in the last century but 2011 was just in another league... one of the strongest ever recorded in human history and in combination with the location of the epicenter causing likewise record breaking tsunamis... that impacted the japanese population... now they're more prepared then ever for these things

@深川恋太郎 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately for Westerners, the damage is not as great as Westerners might expect, and people are not saddened by it. In fact, the damage is not that great. Most of the buildings that collapsed were very old barns, and the houses where people live are designed to be earthquake-proof, so they will not be destroyed. The media reports focus 'only' on the damaged areas. The places that are not damaged are not reported at all, which misleads the viewers. In reality, the only widespread damage is power cuts and traffic paralysis, which is actually not much. Westerners should remember that Japan is a developed country with regard to disasters. The damage is small. The Noto Peninsula is to the Russia what the Kamchatka Peninsula is to the US, or the Alaska Peninsula, an underdeveloped area and an area that hardly counts for industry. There is no need for great concern.
