On 1 January 2024, at 16:10 JST (07:10 UTC), a MJMA7.6 (Mw7.5) earthquake struck 7 km (4.3 mi) north-northwest of Suzu, located on the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. The reverse-faulting shock achieved a maximum JMA seismic intensity of Shindo 7 and Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). The shaking and accompanying tsunami caused extensive damage on the Noto Peninsula, particularly in the towns of Wajima, Suzu and Anamizu. Ishikawa reported 232 fatalities and 21 missing, while over 1,100 were injured across multiple prefectures, making it the deadliest earthquake in Japan since the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) officially named this earthquake the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake (Japanese: 令和6年能登半島地震, Hepburn: Reiwa 6-nen Noto-hantō Jishin). It led to Japan's first major tsunami warning since the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, and a tsunami of 6.58 m (22 ft) was measured along the Sea of Japan coast.

I was surprised at the number of people walking leisurely with cameras in hand. Have Japanese people already forgotten the image of the 3.11 tsunami? Even if the tsunami was 50 centimeters high, it would not be at a level where a human could walk properly.

I am Japanese. I was a victim of the 3.11 disaster. I want people not only in Japan but all over the world to understand the horror of tsunamis. If a tsunami warning sounds, no matter what happens, immediately evacuate to higher ground. If nothing happens, that's fine. There are some elderly people who cannot evacuate and people with pets, but we hope that by helping each other with our neighbors, as many people as possible can have a bright future.

These videos are during the earthquake itself. And they are not cameras they are "leisurely" walking around with, they are phones, which are devices that almost every person has on them at any time of the day. We unfortunately do not however have instant teleportation devices available to instantly transport us to some magically safe area during the shaking. Neither does not filming the earthquake serve to prevent the tsunami from occurring. Almost all the people who were at the lower elevations near the coast evacuated immediately after the shaking subsided precisely because they did learn from 3.11.

I grew up in Southern California and have experienced a number of quakes in the San Diego area. All kind of felt like being on a boat in choppy seas. During a one-week trip to Japan I experienced two quakes there, and they felt completely different, like the building I was in being hit by a truck, a much sharper jolt.

Every time I watch one of these I always think "Why are you standing under power lines!?" But so far I have only seen 1 line come down and that was to a house that collapsed. It really is a testament to japans power line workers and how solid they build their utilities.

Most Japanese people do not cry even if they experience a very large earthquake. However, as there are exceptions to everything, some of the females in this video scream loudly and are frightened. What I find difficult to understand is the females in the car crying. Cars don't flip over in an earthquake, and car roofs protect passengers from falling objects. It's much safer inside a car than it is outside.

I have experienced a 6.3 magnitute earthquake which epicenter was only 10km away from my home at the time and let me tell you that it is even more terrifying than most people think. You can physically feel the earth move beneath you like a piece of paper and the sound is something I will never forget. It feels like the earth is giving away from under you and you can physically see buildings moving from side to side. Those were the worst 20 seconds I have ever experienced in my life so far.
@Tatsuji_Tatchan
@Tatsuji_Tatchan 29 күн бұрын
The movement can be very amplified in a car because of the suspension. Also in the video you can see that both the car they are in and the car behind them were thrust towards the ditch on their left during one of the stronger earth movements. In addition as the woman was already startled and feeling fear due to the extreme motion of having the car you're in being lurched to the side, her emotions became greatly heightened when she saw the buildings next to them collapse. I don't know about in your country, but here in Japan we do not usually see people's homes falling down suddenly into the street next to us. As to being safer in a car, the car's structure is only enough to protect from small falling objects. Many people are killed when things like trees or bricks collapse onto cars. They are meant to protect from wind and rain, etc., however they are not bomb shelters.

裏金献金が正義 ( It is justice to donate secret money in Japan.
