JAPAN EARTHQUAKE AND TSUNAMI COMPILATION January 1, 2024

On 1 January 2024, at 16:10 JST (07:10 UTC), a MJMA7.6 or Mw7.5 earthquake struck 7 km (4.3 mi) north-northwest of Suzu, located in the Noto Peninsula of Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. It was the largest earthquake in the country since the Great East Japan earthquake of March 2011.The Japan Meteorological Agency officially named this earthquake the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake (Japanese: 令和6年能登半島地震, Hepburn: Reiwa 6-nen Noto-hantō Jishin). It also led to Japan's first major tsunami warning since the 2011 earthquake, and a tsunami measuring up to 1.2 m (4 ft) was observed along the Sea of Japan.

What this shows me is the amazing construction of the architecture, that most of the buildings and homes were minimally damaged instead of completely destroyed like it would be in most places around the world, and the calm and collectiveness the people kept instead of panicking. I hope all recover well. I'm so happy that this didn't end with the major tsunamis they thought might happen.

I am Japanese. The reason why many Japanese people remain calm in the video is probably because the people around them are not panicking. Japanese people tend to feel calm when the people around them are calm. Of course there is fear. But we also know that panicking is actually dangerous. I think I'm trying to calm myself down and ask the people around me, "Are you okay?" so that I don't lose my cool. Because that's what I do too.

Japan has been repeatedly hit by large earthquakes, and each time engineers have reviewed their seismic strength and built stronger buildings, roads, and homes. However, old earthquake-resistant buildings, especially wooden houses, suffered significant damage from this earthquake. In Suzu City, which is close to the epicenter, many wooden houses can be seen, and nearly 90% of the buildings are completely destroyed or close to being completely destroyed. There are still many people trapped under collapsed houses. Tsunami damage has also been seen, and the number of aftershocks is said to far exceed that of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake that occurred on January 17, 1995.

There are about 200 countries in the World. A 7.6 magnitude Earthquake would cause thousands, or tens of thousands, of deaths in any of these countries. Except Japan, of course, where engineering standards are exceptionally high. Besides, you may have noticed in these short videos, that most people tend to stay relatively still, maintain self-control and not panic excessively. And that's also because schools in Japan regularly practise earthquake drills. Schoolchildren are taught at an early age how to find cover and remain safe in the event of an earthquake.

This is a horrible, heartbreaking situation. The rescuers and humanitarian workers have been doing an amazing job, they are real heroes. I feel terrible for all the people who have lost friends and loved ones though. Nothing can fix that or bring them back. But I think everyone who is able to around the world should try to pitch in to help in some way so the people in Ishikawa Prefecture can clean up, rebuild, and start to get things back to normal. Indonesia (my home country) may have the most earthquake number in a year, but with such magnitude is not so often as with Japan. I think that's why the Japanese are much more aware of damaged caused by quakes. And, oh, we have hattrick quakes (3 times in a day with 3.5 to 4.8 M) at 31st December, a day before Japan's.

Yo vivo en Japón y la verdad estos videos son de lugares no tan cerca porque los lugares bien cerca se quedaron sin modo de comunicación y no podían subir los videos , después de días recién salieron los videos de los lugares que se llevaron la peor parte pero no te recomiendo buscarlos porque esas imágenes si son muy feas se puede ver ciudades destrozadas casas derrumbadas por montones y tsunami destruyendo casas e incendios gigantes son imágenes muy feas

A few things really stand out for me. First, Japan has some of the best engineering and architecture going back centuries. It's incredible that so many ancient structures have survived for so long through numerous earthquakes. Second, I'm surprised to see so many people still driving around even when a tsunami alert has been issued. You would think that the disaster of 2011 would still be very fresh in everyone's mind and they would all have a route to higher ground planned. I don't know why so many people didn't immediately leave where they were and start climbing. I think this shows that if there was a repeat of 2011 there would still be a large loss of life, because some people still can't seem to comprehend the threat even though they've seen it happen.

These emergency warnings are sounds that are intentionally created to make anyone who hears them feel anxious and alert to earthquakes and other disasters. And when it turns out to be a definite catastrophe, a different calm chime will sound on the TV breaking news. It's very creepy.

That's terrifying. I live in a hurricane prone area so every summer and fall we have to worry about a potential hurricane but at least we have several days notice to prepare and evacuate. With an earthquake, it's just calm one second and the next second your house is about to fall apart.

I’m from Alabama so we don’t get earth quakes, just hurricanes named Michael that takes roofs and fences. Still bitter about that one. Back on topic, I was living in Japan for a little over a year, back in 2011. Then that earthquake happen. It was the most unnatural feeling I’ve ever felt I have to say. The best way to describe it was standing on a table while people shake it side to side and up and down. My feet would move like they were one one of those stair master, except I was standing in the grass. One place I wouldn’t stand is there 2:58

Durante la semana pasada y cuando vi el top de los sismos de 2023 fue porque dos veces a las 11 PM antes de dormir escuchaba la alerta sísmica en mi cabeza me quedaba en suspenso hasta que me doy cuenta que es solo en mi cabeza ,,, en fin esto porque tengo la sensación de que cuando hay sismos en filipinas y en Japón en un lapso de una semana llega un sismo a México,, si llegara a ocurrir espero que sea cuando todos estemos en casa, o en un lugar muy seguro 🙏 y a riesgo de parecer más extraña no se si observaron que es un movimiento muy extraño no es oscilación que mece es muy cortito como saltitos cortitos pero con mucha fuerza

富山県では震度5強でしたが、家の中がぐちゃぐちゃになりました。熱帯魚の水槽の水も3分の1が無くなりました。 そこまでの強い横揺れが1分以上続きましたね。 皆さん、地震は震度5強でそれだけの被害が出るので甘く見ないでくださいね。

A stone lantern, yes. The woman in the white and red is a shrine maiden, they are responsible for helping clean and maintain the shrine. The fact that she was even thinking of trying to support that thing is ridiculous, nothing is worth getting crushed over.
