I honestly think people in these situations don't realize how high the waves really are, or how much danger they're in.
@isamayoge87363 жыл бұрын
Right? I don’t understand all those commenters judging this clueless people. Even with the knowledge that Tsunamis exist it’s difficult to tell if it’s one. (And before 2004 it wasn’t common knowledge for Europeans) How dangerous this waves really were was possible to see after they drowned these ships, before that they watched the waves without a scale. Then consider the time their brains needed to process this very unusual situation to switch on survival mode. Imagine having a calm and peaceful paradise vacation and just observing something weird on a day as everyday, see ships drowning and need a view seconds to process, take your kids and run. Between the drowned ships and them running wasn’t even an entire minute.

Tsunami's aren't all come in those very big and tall waves all the time but it will come at shore very rapidly and constantly ..
@khymaaren3 жыл бұрын
The no sense of danger is astonishing. I just watched another video made by an Italian family or group of families. Five "smaller" waves hit the shores and they were having fun, barely moving back enough to clear the water... I'm sorry, but if you die behaving like that, it's entirely your fault. The sea gave you several warnings: Back off! Even if it's your first day on the shore of such a large body of water, the fact that the waves had no apparent reason to behave like that (i.e. calm, sunny weather) should have been a major red flag of something potentially dangerous happening. The parental instinct alone should have triggered a warning long before they started running...

From second 1:35, the woman says again "I think there's a seaquake" and the man then says: "Nope". At 3:30 they decided to go up together. The woman realised much more quickly that it was a tsunami and therefore a danger. The man enjoyed it until the last second. Wishing you good health

The women: „I think we should pack our stuff“ 3:08 the man: „I think we should really go away“ 3:35: the women is shouting from the back: „come!“ the man: „what is that?“ 3:45: the man: „we have to go!“ the women: „where?“ the man:“as far back as possible“ 5:00 the man: „come on, we have to make it. we will make it!“ and continues to motivate his family to run

Now the whole planet is engulfed in a tsunami warning and to date I have not heard one siren - it's like we didn't learn anything from this tsunami and most of the world's early warning systems of buoys have been turned off! The buoys (in event mode) that are out there today have reached from the pacific ocean to the atlantic ocean (started in Tonga)! Because the sirens didn't go off people thought they were to go in the water as normal and ended up running for their lives in New Zealand! The thing about waves is, and people who lived their whole lives landlocked will never know, is that you really don't know the size of a wave until it's right up on you. Mainly because in your field of vision (the open sea), there's really nothing to compare it to. And even if you see it in the distance, most have the midset that the wave will crash before it reaches shore.

I experienced it and we all were literally traumatized by the earthquake for so many years . It was haunting. So many families just wiped out like an entire island were flattened and the authority couldn't establish any contact as everything was destroyed. We literally went to beach for picnic on 25 December with my family and my uncle's family as it was Christmas holiday and we swam and enjoyed our day so much and we were all so tired and slept like a baby and on 26 dec, early morning this happened ,at first ,when the earthquake hit , I thought, i feel like swinging because we were in the sea the day before so it happens because of the waves and suddenly it starts shaking violently,i went to my parents room and woke my mom and dad was out for his early morning walk and my mom woke my brothers up and asked me to go outside and sit ,there were already so much chaos outside and then it felt like earth was crying whilst shaking violently like it was the end of the world and it went on for several minute and the aftershocks was more scary and then the tsunami , it was difficult to believe what was going on and as we were cut off from the rest of the world ,we totally relied on radio transmission and we would hear everyday the announcement of missing person list and every day there was a new list of people missing , they still put obituary and message for the missing people on 26 dec of every year in the newspaper . It's heartbreaking. May their soul Rest in peace .

What is so terrifying is, as we can see in this footage, you can't really see those destructive waves until they are almost upon you. It's not like a Hollywood film where some giant wall of water wave breaks over a beach. You are in the shallows and then suddenly swept off your feet and the waves keep on going inland at an incredible speed, taking you along with them colliding with everything.

I remember donkey's years ago as a kid reading a comic (of all things) about a tsunami. That taught me about the water being sucked out, hopefully I would have run. But it did show this giant wave of water, Not a strange while line on the horizon. We were camping in a valley when it happened. We were actually on a boat (in South Africa) the skipper was very worried about the action of the tides. As we drove out of the valley after our holiday, and back into cell phone reception we began to get all the messages it was surreal.

@@cathymartens7478 That must have been really awful to experience. I cannot imagine what those people went through in 2004. I think in certain places, Banda Aceh etc, there were waves in fact very tall waves, 35 metres high I think, breaking at the shoreline. I cannot imagine just standing on a beach and watching that come at you. I suppose you are just transfixed in terror.
@cathymartens74782 жыл бұрын
@@strikeleather6503 I can't imagine either. We were on the East Coast of Southern Africa (thousands of miles away)and the tide was really weird, but we had no idea of what was going on. Those poor poor people who experienced this, just terrible. We were camping on an estuary, the owner knew something weird had happened but not what.l

Very good point. Once he saw those large military/coast guard ships get absolutely swallowed by the wave it hit him and they hauled ass. Still, it’s such an alien, unbelievable sight that many people who aren’t trained or mentally disposed to perform well during emergencies will just stand there, motionless, brains stuck in “FREEZE” mode. This is actually an ancient mammalian survival adaptation: “If you see something totally unknown and scary, FREEZE.” Reason is, moving gives away your position to potential predators, you’re hardest to see when motionless, and it gives you time to analyze the threat. This is your cerebellum/amygdala, which is ancient and powerful, and can inhibit your higher logic/reasoning cerebral cortex. You can’t control it, it controls you. Unfortunately, rare catastrophic events like this are so foreign and terrifying they trigger this freeze reflex which is obviously the last thing you should do. But have sympathy for those just standing there still, staring blankly at death. They’re not stupid, or overly curious, thrill-seeking or lazy: Their bodies and minds are frozen in mortal terror.

Sorry for such a moronic question but aside from drowning alone, were people being slammed into things after being swept in the waves? I just thought it would be strictly drowning, I never considered the speed of those waves and how dangerous they were.

So amazing that so many people were unaware of the signs of an approaching tsunami, but even worse is that there was no siren warning system in place.
