I will be honest. Japan government only has themselves to blame. Just like how we blame the American government for tolerating these online fools and harassers. I do understand that in the law, they have a hard time placing these behaviors as an illegal activity, since with current laws, it wouldnt necessarily be illegal.. just annoying. However, i do feel we need to start making these types of annoying behavior towards strangers as misdemeanors. Outwardly, I'm pretty social, but I highly value just being able to do my own thing without interruption of any sort. If I saw someone acting that way in Japan, I would definitely say something, first in Japanese, then in English. Respect your surroundings.

In their country they request us to speak their language, but they don't do this by themselves in japan. I working at convenience store and many foreigners speak to me in their language, not try to use a bit of Japanese. Sometimes they even get anger about I can't speak English well . My son and his family went to Japan last year for his birthday. He and my college granddaughter speak Japanese, learned in Texas from a teacher over the internet in Japan. Hi mid-20s son and my daughter-in-law don't speak the language. So they had to split up if they wanted to go different places, one speaker with one non-speaker. They love Japan, my granddaughter is studying to become an English teacher and teach in Japan. They honor the culture and I bet any one of them would stop the idiots from America who are giving them a bad name and tell them to either go away, fly home, or get arrested. Someone has to do it. :)

I've sat on a bus as a teen girl with an old man making comments about my breasts and none of the adults around me did anything. I didn't look as young as I was perhaps, but still. I would do something to help an adult, let alone a child. But to assume everyone else would too is not necessarily realistic. Including the person it's happening to. You are more likely than not going to be in shock when it happens and freeze due to survival instincts. Like I have done many times. I have not been touched in a public transport to be fair. I used to live in Tokyo in Kitashinjuku from 2016-2017. I'm half black/half white and also speak Japanese very well and write/read it. As someone that loves and respects Japan and its culture, this is reprehensible and completely asinine behavior. This not only makes other people of certain races or cultures look bad, but makes Japan less likely to further even want people to experience their amazing country and culture. I’ve had to say “No, don’t apologise, it’s my mistake.” a few times. I hold the traditional upbringing of Japanese people in high regard, a lot of them come out very polite and good.

No Gaijin is often just there to keep misunderstandings off the table. Once you speak decent Japanese and know Japanese mannerisms, they will usually let you in.
