Step by step tutorial on how to speed gift wrap like in Japanese department stores.
Original Video Here: • Gift Wrapping Hack
Since I'm explaining it as I go, it looks like it takes the same time as wrapping a normal present. However, the method allows you to increase your speed greatly as you get better.

This is actually faster than if you align the gift parallel to the wrapping. Once you're used to it, the gift practically rolls forward as you wrap the paper and it will be done very quickly.

I agree with the video! I have used both methods and had no idea there were others that were this creative. I love the diagonal method because it's outside of the box. :-) I have been wrapping gifts like this since I was a kid. I also love to use wrapping paper for bows and cut long strips of wrapping paper and curl them with scissors. It recycles those extra pieces of paper which most folks throw in the trash.I curl them on the blank side and others on the design side to add dimension and a pop. Folks always love it. It's more time but less money spent on bows.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 7 жыл бұрын
Nice! You probably have to be careful with the gift wrap as ribbons because some gift wraps are rather thin and are a bit more fragile. I just sorta skip the bows all together. At least its wrapped! =D

It works pretty well with square or rectangular boxes. Flatter items like books and DVDs are trickier because you don't really get that room to tuck and fold up the side. It still WORKs...it just doesn't look as nice. But I'm giving them to my 2 year old anyway, so I doubt he'll care.

+BeatTheBush I wonder if the concepts in this wrapping technique came from understanding the art of Origami.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 8 жыл бұрын
It appears to be related! I mean the original method simply wraps 4 sides and has 2 very complicated sides to close. This simply wraps 2 sides and has 4 medium complexity sides to close. I guess you can think of it as distribution the complexity so it can be done quickly without fumbling.

Why do so many people care about not putting tape directly on the box? I've done that with literally every single present I've ever wrapped. It helps hold everything in place so the present doesn't slide around while your wrapping it. I've also NEVER had the tape rip the box when it was being opened. It's a present, people. Sheesh!
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 7 жыл бұрын
Lol. Some people don't like the tape on the present I guess because when you remove it, it could possibly damage a mint condition box. Enough people complained that i actually did another version where there is no tape used. Very similar but no tape. It's here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bYWkZYqeqs6SrqM

Being a Japanese person that loves to wrap christmas gifts and has seen first hand all the Japanese department stores wrap like this in .5 seconds, I have attempted -and I have failed 1/3 of the time. Honestly, it’s a really great technique -but I have ocd about how perfect my folds are supposed to be and I just can’t fold it quite as nicely as I get the folds to be when the wrapping paper is parallel to the present. Also, I’m a VERY good gift wrapper so not being able to nail this technique every time I implement it is a huge punch in the gut for me 😂😂

No clue how that makes it any easier, looks like quite a few more orchestrated moves.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 8 жыл бұрын
It's not easier and it takes more skill to do it. However, the number of continuous movements is greatly reduced making it faster.
@blindthief
@blindthief 7 жыл бұрын
Not really faster. I timed myself using the conventional way and it wasn't slower. I think speed just depends on what you're comfortable with and your level of wrapping skill. Has nothing to do with your method. But thanks for sharing anyway. It's nice to know there are different ways of doing it.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 7 жыл бұрын
blindthief Ok. But can you say your experience in wrapping both ways are equal?
@blindthief
@blindthief 7 жыл бұрын
BeatTheBush Equally fun - yes. Both ways are good. I just don't agree that your method allows everyone to work faster. They're really just two different styles. Perhaps I'm missing something but I don't see a shortcut. You might be faster than me but that's based on your experience and skill.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 7 жыл бұрын
blindthief Oh no, I wouldn't want to say I am faster, I wouldn't make that claim. All I'm saying is, for a person that is equally skilled in both methods; this one would be faster. For you at this moment, the regular method is probably faster. But if you become equally skilled in this new method, I am claiming this will be faster. Any person that just saw this video and go and tries it without practice will be pretty slow at it. It easy to dismiss a new way specially if you are pretty proficient at your own way and there is no need to learn something else.

Not really a "hack" since the paper must have more or less a particular size for each box. Most of the "traditional" methods don't require a particular size, which means you don't waste time with measuring and cutting the paper...
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 8 жыл бұрын
+dXb Traditional methods does require a particular size because you have to cut it from the roll and cut it again if its too long.
@lovelilypad5755

I tried this before but couldn't get the sizing right. I think it's a neat way to wrap a present. I've seen it recommended to fold by opposite sides instead of around one way so the wrapping is consistent.

How is this a hack? You start by measuring the paper, how it overlaps by an inch - so why not just tape it right then and there, and flatten/curl the sides shut? Three tapes, and no messing with corners... Just as fast, if not faster...
@BeatTheBush

Given a person with equal skill in both methods, you can wrap it faster this way because the movements are continuous.
