The history of Japan is with rice. It's no exaggeration to say that, rice is so important for Japanese people. For example, as you know, sake and sushi are made from rice.
Yamagata Prefecture has long been known as one of the famous rice fields in Japan. There, rice cultivation began in the 8th century and developed greatly in the Edo period.
As proof of that, the warehouse for storing rice is protected as a historic building.
Japanese people have been value rice cakes made by processing rice as sacred food, and even now they are still a symbol of New Year Anniversary called "oshogatsu". It is more important to Japanese people than Christmas. And in the Tohoku region, various kinds of rice cake dishes are eaten.
Many traditional events in Japan have the meaning of wishing for a good harvest of rice. Especially at the oshogatsu festival, it's called 'gokokuhojo' and wish for a good harvest. Oshogatsu festivals are indispensable for Japanese people.
