I absolutely adore this version of the old Mowtown classic. Proud to have been a "modern Romantic" in the early 1980s! I bought the black eye liner in Boots Chemist and I used talcum powder to whiten my face!!! I thought I was super cool!! SOOOOOO glad that this was my era of music. The fashion, the music the early 80's I was truly blessed. Oh to be young again and go back in time!! 😜

Thanks for sharing your experience. You were very lucky, indeed! If you don't mind my asking, did you also have a chance to frequent the Blitz Club? If so, did you ever see Pete Burns, Boy George, Marilyn or the guys from Spandau Ballet there?

Personally, I am exclusively attracted to girly men and David Sylvian is at the top of my list. Im 49 and never really got into Japan as a youngster, I was more into The Who, The Police, Buzzcocks etc, got an older brother who played a lot of stuff very loudly from his bedroom ! Anyway, I am of course familiar with this band and ive been watching a lot of videos on here this last week and as an older man, can appreciate how technically gifted they were. The tones, textures and chord changes are very intricate, not to mention the superb bass playing and the way the vocals weave themselves in and out. Genius band.

Until a few minutes ago, I hadn't seen this video for 30 years. Amazing. I was such a Japan / Sylvian fan the summer they released this video I bleached my hair (something of a challenge given I'm dark haired), and wore white winkle-pickers with my dark suits. I thought I looked amazing - though I'm sure everyone else thought I looked stomach-churning. I thought David Sylvian was the coolest guy on the planet. I was gutted when Japan split up.

I'm sure you looked great, Mikey! David Sylvian was, at that time, the coolest person on the planet. I'm glad they never really achieved full 'pop' status, they were too alternative, cult and altogether cool for all that nonsense. Absolutely my favourite band of the 80s. Closely followed by the Cocteau Twins. Ah, memories.

For many years around that time, I loved their album Tin Drum. I loathe it now. However, In Vogue (from Quiet Life), and Gentlemen Take Polaroids (from GTP) remain very firm favourites - In Vogue possibly having the edge. By coincidence, Quiet Life and GTP are the best of their album covers.

Wow! I wish I was alive then, I'm a young teen. So jealous! I would do anything to see them playing live. For what you said about height (though nothing is confirmed), David standing next to Ryuichi Sakamoto (170 cm) is a bit shorter than him, so I'm guessing he must be around 165-168 cm! Definitely thought he was going to be really tall for some reason, especially his younger brother Steve. I suppose they just give tall energy haha. I thought it was very funny I'm almost his height now, and will end up being about the same when I'm older.

I would definitely have to agree with you. Japan may not have had many hits, but they paved the way for New Wave and the New Romantics. Don't get me wrong, I like other bands like Duran Duran as well, and I appreciate the more pop-sounding vocals Simon Le Bon displayed in most of his work, but Japan just had something special. I think if there would be an edit to your comment, I would add influential and original. Last summer I used to go for runs every night in a loop around a large park, and the music platform would recommend songs based on similar things I listened to. Japan's Gentlemen Take Polaroids came up, and I decided I liked it enough to add to my playlist. The headphones I had at the time were not very good, so I paid little attention to what was going on behind David's rich vocals. Somehow I forgot about it until December or so, and once I had rediscovered them, it was pretty clear I wasn't going to let them get away so easily. When I listened to that track again, it was the first time I could really hear everything. I was blown away by the bassline and synthesizers and developed a secret longing to play bass. I have a history to quit playing instruments, starting with forced piano lessons at age 8, and at age 11 when my uncle gave me one of his many guitars and an amp. I carried a lot of shame with me from being perceived that way by my parents, so I ignored bass and took it upon myself to start learning extensive history about the band, which still remains one of my hyperfixations. Fast forward to early summer 2023, I eventually gave in and spent all of my money on a fretted 4-string Harley Benton Jazz Bass. As soon as it was delivered, I started playing right away, and immediately I knew that this was the instrument for me. I practice bass and listen to Japan every day now. It's my latest obsession, but I'm proud to say it seems I've gotten past my commitment issues. In addition to my newfound love for bass, I found my old keyboard from my piano days, and have started playing both keyboard and guitar as well. I'm almost 14 years old now, and I cannot wait for my future with music. I want to thank Japan for this brilliant gift. Thanks to them, I have found a new passion for playing music, listening to it, making bass tabs, and expanding my knowledge by reading articles and watching old interviews with band members. (And my intense love for David Sylvian, the prettiest man I've ever seen, and giving my school crush extra points for looking exactly like him hahahahaha) Hoping to soon get a fretless bass to play just like Mick, what an amazing man. Rest in peace. On a personal level, this is why Japan will always have a special place in my life, and why I also consider them the best band of the 80's, and probably ever. What a spectacular group of young gentlemen. Richard, Mick, Steve, David, Rob, (and Masami!), thank you so much ❤. I hope you enjoyed my essay hahahahahaha

@@Niko7739 It's a close second to the original. The arrangement is imaginative, musicianship excellent. I'm sure Smokey loves this just the way he loved ABC, and I don't know why you would make such a cheap and tacky comment.

Unfortunately UK never appreciated its bands... Like Depeche Mode. Nowadays kids doesn't know who they are! In Poland where I come from, everyone knows DM and appreciate their input into the music. Speaking about Japan... They've finished so early... I always imagine what could they do if not that splitting.... But I understand them... David was an amazing artist. His solo albums are so deep and extraordinary.... love them all.

Absolute nonsense! I grew up in the UK in the 70s/80s and I can assure you we very much appreciated the music. Depeche Mode had 14 songs in the top 10 of the UK charts, and 43 in the top 40.
