The Type 16 maneuver combat vehicle is a wheeled armored fighting vehicle of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The Type 16 maneuver combat vehicle (MCV) equips designated combat units. Due to its light weight and small size, it is designed for easy deployment (by aircraft if needed) allowing rapid movement on narrow roads and in built-up areas in response to various contingencies. Despite its small size and light armor, it can successfully attack much larger armored fighting vehicles as well as personnel, using its large caliber gun.

@@user-np7fj6gq3u the gun is based on the L7 design, like many before it. German Rheinmetall made their own versions for Leopard series tanks, as did South African Denel. Swedish Bofors made "L74" reproduction for their Strf.103 tanks. America made significant modifications to L7 to suit their needs, including new breech assemblies and mountings called "M68" - these were found most famously on M60 tanks. Japan Steel Works 105 is a modern reproduction of the L7 design like "L74" and "M68", characterised best as an L7 variant by the distinctive fume-extractor shape along the barrel. L7 design was sold for license productions to many countries, and even some Chinese tanks ended up with derived versions of it. old Type 74 tank uses the American modification of L7 "M68" Type 16 is the latest in a long list of vehicles to use the design in some form, and i doubt it will be the last

The bit where they sit and waggle their guns like Daleks is rather amusing. Cool video!

Thanks for watching. I am glad you are interested in the JGSDF. These 16MCVs have appropriated technology from Type 10 tanks, including recoil control technology and fire control systems. As a result, when the vehicle is aimed at a target, the turret moves while the main gun is pointed at the target, even if the vehicle body moves, allowing accurate firing while driving.

@@cameronhampton8916 Yes. With its high mobility, precision firepower and tactical datalink system, the 16MCV is an important land combat weapon in the future defence of the Japanese archipelago.

Thanks for watching, the 16MCV, like the Italian B1 Centauro, has its engine positioned at the front of the chassis. This arrangement allows the engine block to protect the crew in addition to the frontal armour if the vehicle is hit from the front of the bodywork. Although the engine had the disadvantage of being inoperable if hit by a bullet, the JGSDF gave priority to crew survivability. This engine arrangement is effective in the ambush tactics envisaged by the 16MCV.

Not only would the extra protection of the engine no longer be given, it would also mean that the ammunition bearing in the rear would have to be moved forward, which would make the wheeled armored vehicle very vulnerable, especially against HEAT projectiles.

@@CT--js6sp Thank you for pointing this out. The final production version of the 16MCV has a power pack at the front left of the vehicle body, a cockpit at the front right parallel to the power pack, and a central fighting compartment with turret and turret. The rear of the vehicle is a multi-purpose space that also serves as an ammunition storage area. Although it is not widely known, the 16MCV has in fact also been built and technically tested in the prototype stage with a rear engine arrangement. However, after a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of both, assuming combat within Japanese territory and the required tactics, it was decided that the advantages of the front engine arrangement were greater. The Ground SDF fully understands that the 16MCV cannot replace tanks in terms of firepower and armour. The role of the 16MCV is to buy time for MBTs to arrive and to support infantry; the 16MCV can speed at 100 km/h along the high speed roads that stretch across Japan, or, if on a remote island, can be quickly airlifted by Maritime SDF landing craft or Air SDF C-2 transport aircraft. It can then ambush before enemy troops landing on the Japanese mainland, providing a first strike on landing craft and landing parties, and converting positions before the enemy can counter-attack. The armour of the 16MCV is made of grain-fine bullet-proof steel plates, which require advanced steel-making techniques and offer more protection than older armoured versions. As such, it is designed to withstand the machine guns of the IFV and anti-tank firearms carried by infantrymen to the extent that, in actual armour capacity tests of the 16MCV, it has prevented penetration of HEAT ammunition fired from an 84 mm recoilless gun (Carl Gustaf). Once again, the 16MCV is not a vehicle designed to fight MBTs head-on. That is because it is a role given to Type 90 and Type 10 tanks. Finally, thank you for reading this long article.
