Japan’s Earthquake-Resistant Dome Houses Are Made of Styrofoam

When they hear the word “Styrofoam”, most people think about disposable food containers or packaging material, but for one Japanese modular home manufacturer, it is the building material of the future. Its increasingly popular Styrofoam dome houses are highly earthquake-resistant, super cheap and quick to build, and have very high thermal insulating properties. What’s not to like?

If the government backed this company and made them on a large scale it would the price down significantly too, Things like this are needed for people trying to get on the property ladder, cheap affordable housing, so many people can't afford their own homes and have to rent horrible places they can never truly call home.

Just did a quick search, and hey, it says that EPS (styrofoam) are recycleable I don’t know how many percent of the EPS waste is being recycled, or if the byproduct is as durable as it is before being recycled, But it would be cool if EPS wastes can actually be recycled for house materials such as for these dome houses, that would probably help solve the environmental waste issues

No mention of Fire Rating . Styrofoam is flammable and while all surfaces are coated with a cement based 'plaster' that gives it rigidity and limited fire protection, the Styrofoam material is vulnerable even if you add fire retardant chemicals to slow down the spread of fire. Also these Domes should be properly weighed down and anchored to a rather heavy slab and reinforced to resist winds as they can distort and tear off foundations in high winds. Otherwise it is a sensible design but with limitations as mentioned .

There are a lot of advantages of Styrofoam. It's light weight, sky high thermal insulation qualities, sound proof and can be moulded on site. It's main weaknesses is it's flammable, very toxic when it burns and no technology exists yet to recycle it. An alternative might be air entrained spray on concrete (gunite)with hemp fibers in it. It may not be as light weight as Styrofoam but it's light enough not to have sympathetic occolations with an earthquake like regular concrete and stone. Air entrained Gunite would have some thermal insulating qualities thanks to air bubble layer. Hemp fibers or it's alternative would lend reinforcement

Cool vid, lots of learning buuuuuut! These houses are flammable as heck, if any flame gets near and touches more than ten seconds because of the coating they will burst into flame. Plus the toxic gas from the styrofoam might not seem to effect you it will. And even if you opened everything up you would still have heaps of CO2 in there and would be very light headed and could die. Plus the fact that if any thing hit it of if it rained it might chip away. Don't forget the freakin cost. That should be a concrete dome not styrofoam. Plus way to small, I couldn't stand living in those horrible domes. I like the video but I don't like the actual domes great vid. TERRIBLE DOMES. Note if you want to take me on in an argument I have won every speech I have submitted and read and I put up a good fight when argued. Not being aggressive or anything but I'm serious. I'm right ok.
