I was born in Shizuoka, in a hospital about a 10 minute walk from the train station. It's where my maternal family hails from. Even though we left the country ever since my childhood (exactly 30 years ago), we keep coming back every couple years for a family holiday so I've lost count how many times I've taken the Shinkansen. Growing up in Japan was the reason I got interested in trains. I was fortunate enough to remember riding the original 0 series (exactly the same as the one displayed in the York museum) when I was a kid. Though not as fast as the current units, it's still my favourite Shinkansen

I’ve technically been on the Shinkansen before… In Taiwan, the high speed rail trains are a variant from Japan, they’re called the N700T. And I totally agree, the trains are quiet, smooth and fast, much better than flying…

I am living in Japan since 7 years and have taken the Shinkansen on several occasions. It is a really convenient way to get from A to B fast, but the scenery around the tracks is limited (there are often tunnels and walls). If you are not on a Japanese Rail Pass, please be aware that there are no "advance tickets" for the Shinkansen, you always have to pay the same high price regardless of the time you buy your ticket! If you want to see more of the beautiful scenery Japan can offer, you have to use trains not using the Shinkansen tracks and preferably outside the big city clusters of Tokyo and Osaka. Anyway, looking forward to seeing more Japanese Rail videos from Nonstop Eurotrip!

@@NonstopEurotrip Heard that early-bird discounts is a newer concept to JR than to European rail operators. By the way, JR is hiking the JR passes' price by ~77% this Oct though e.g. a 14-day standard class pass will cost ¥80k, up from ¥45k

Fantastic! This really brings me back - 20 years ago, I spent 3+ weeks in Shizuoka. Stayed in the Associa Hotel right by the station (which you can see in the video as you left the station). I used to hang out and watch the Shinkansen trains blow by for entertainment! Took that line many times to/from Tokyo on an earlier generation train set but it was just as quiet, comfortable and perfectly run. Took a ton of local JR lines throughout the prefecture, as far down as Hamamatsu (home of Yamaha, btw). Thanks for this - really looking forward to seeing where else you went!

Very clean stations, trains mostly run on time compared to European ones , on-point automated audible announcements with professional native speakers for the languages. The efficiency and frequency of Shinkansens are really what make them one of the best! Btw, at 5:12 the station staff is announcing for "The customer who is taking pictures to stand back behind the yellow line." They should think of announcing in English too, but as a rule of thumb, even if there are platform doors, I would recommend avoiding getting too close to the edge of the Platform at Japanese stations.

I also enjoy watching the scenary fly past when travelling on the Southeastern High Speed trains at a slightly more sedate 140mph. In 2010 we caught the Shink from Ueno, Tokyo to Aomori in the north, Tohoku line. My memory might be defective on that. Maybe the train then stopped short of Aomori but I know it reaches Aomori now. The train was fabulous and it was the first time I came across perhaps non Dyson vertical hand dryers. The train was so smooth, so quiet and so fast. Subsequently we have travelled a few times times on Eurostar. Fast, yes, but otherwise very disappointing and was no comparison. Maybe Eurostar is better now, getting on for a decade later but I have no doubt so is the Shink, as you have shown. We had to buy our JR East rail pass before leaving Australia. We still had to confirm at the station and amusingly while everything was worked electronically, there was still lots of paper and hand writing for tickets. We caught quite a few local trains in Japan, and it all worked so well. I remember reading about the amelioration of the smash of air and bang in the train when one high speed train passed another. It was interesting to learn but I can't remember it now.

"Shinkansen" is a proper noun, which means that it can be treated as a single word. If it were 'new main line' then it would have been 新しい本線. But it's 新幹線, which is a single compound word. It's not wrong to say that the Shinkansen was new in 1964. 新しかった新幹線 also makes sense to say in Japanese.

As a half-Japanese who frequently visits the country, I would have to say that Kodama (and the Tokaido Shinkansen in general) has too many stops, many of which are impractical in the economic sense. Some were simply made out of political pressure during the construction of the railway. The local officials refused to allow the building of the rails in their towns unless they were promised that the train would stop at their place. On the other hand, it is beneficial to locals of the said areas who have to travel back and forth to Osaka or Tokyo. Still, from a bigger picture I think they are unnecessary and simply defeat the purpose of a high-speed train

@@luke211286 Agree, but the kodama services are used as short distance services, and a feeder for the Nozomi, and the timetables work so well that you can easily connect. And the fast services don't get held up.

@@NonstopEurotrip I'm ranting more about some Shinkansen stops rather than the kodama service itself 😅. You're right, kodama is great as a feeder service that serves non-hub stations of mid-sized cities (Shizuoka is a good example of this). I still wonder why there's even a Shin-Fuji station. No train transfers as it is isolated as a shinkansen station, and it is in middle of fuckin nowhere.

Hello. I enjoyed watching your video. I think JR's green car is equivalent to business class. First class on the Shinkansen is JR East's Gran Class. Recently, however, JR Tokai announced plans to introduce seats equivalent to Gran Class. Please try to compare by all means when it is introduced.😊😊😊

Not true, that very much depends. For instance in my first two weeks of sightseeing I only took two Shinkansen over shorter distances and a few local trains, covered by a city pass. Then in my 3rd week of solely filming, I did lots of mileage so got the 7 day JR green car railpass for that, which was definitely worth it.

Hi. Have you complained to KZbin yet - channel content keeps interrupting the adverts!? I have visited Japan but did not ride the Shinkansen. I'm not a fan of the design of the front (and rear) of the trains, much preferring that of the original 'O' series of 1964 (albeit they may not have been so streamlined and fast). In 2018, my wife, her mother and I travelled on the Tianjin-Beijing high-speed train. It reached a maximum of 347kph (216mph) and the entire journey (135 mi) was a fantastically fast and smooth ride of only 30 minutes.

Interesting note: the older N700 had bigger windows than the N700A, so the new S variant have bigger windows again :) I'm not sure if it's dependent of which factory built the trainset. My limited experience was back in 2018, and i could see the "S" in videos since.

Great video, as always. Personally the train interior did not impressed me. It a has a bit of a 70's airplane vibe, especially with the smal windows but, although interior design is importan the smooth and quiet ride, the comfortable seats, the cleanliness, the punctuation and the frequency are far more important and the were top notch. Amazing service.

The seats on the N700 trains do feel a bit boring, yes. But the small windows are actually really great, since they mean that each row has its own window - no misaligned windows, no fighting over whether the window blind should be up or down! Some of the other Shinkansen trains, particularly the 800 Series and E7, have much nicer interiors IMO. The E6 also has a lovely first class interior, but the standard class interior looks dated. To compensate, I think the E6 has the best exterior design of any train ever made.
