Solo travel, well that becomes an imperative if your actually want to go anywhere on your own schedule. In the past I don't know how many times trips with other people fell through and never happened cause stuff happens. It happens even more often, when more people are involved in a trip. Interestingly enough my previous trips to Japan have not been solo, because I was visiting friends who lived in Asia and Japan was an add on destination at my insinuation. My next trip will be solo, because I have goals and interests that I need to accomplish that are not easily shared. The thing I've learned is to just do it, because it will mostly go as you have planned, and when things go awry, you'll inevitably find and experience things you didn't know existed, or needed till you encounter them. Nathan's rules are the basis of a great solo trip to anywhere, but apply doubly to Japan.

Yes, that is something that happens very often: Trips often fall through when dealing with other people. I'm sure your future solo trips will bring happy memories and loads of experiences to talk about! Can't wait to hear about them! .. and with the Ninja Monkey community I'm sure there will always be someone to hang out with in Japan if you want to!

I don't understand why there seems to be a (general) stigma around solo travel. As much as I love traveling with my friends, it can be pretty difficult to get people together to travel, especially as you and your friends get older and start families. Some of the best memories I have of traveling come from solo trips, and while I haven't been to Japan (yet) I can definitely agree that it's easier to meet and talk to locals when you're traveling on your own.
@NinjaMonkeyguy

Doing solo travel now in Japan. I’ve only been to Asian countries so far doing solo travels. And I must say Japan has been the most convenient and welcoming for solo travelers. For instance, in Seoul, SK, I have trouble eating in restaurants because sometimes they require at least 2 people. But in Japan, the food culture itself accommodates solo travelers. For example, you eat ramen on your own. Or you can just buy food from the street or convenience stores on the go. Also, USJ has special lane for singles so it’s almost like Im on express pass. Lol

I write again: your advices are really the best! Especially all the considerations about the intimate aspects of tavelling solo, the "risk" of loneliness, and so on... but the absolute best is your conclusion: "it is best to go to Japan solo, than not to ho to Japan at all"! Just one "big worry" (as I have also written in another comment): since one of the "secrets" of solo travelling to Japan is "to plan in advance", the only doubt is how to combine the freedom given by the fact that a solo traveller can personalize the trip to meet personal requirements (and also to "slow down" a bit when necessary) with the need to plan and book everything well in advance?

I am planning to travel solo to Japan after my divorce... so I am "solo" at the moment (barring some occasional "friendships")... but I also think that for someone who is really looking for a travel in Japan (for a person who is "in love" with Japan since many years) it could also be very difficult to be able to "synchronize" his/hers plans with another person (who could be not as fascinated with this Country).. I mean: I am planning to spend around a month there, at minimum, and I am going to visit also some "not so famous" areas and I will "tweak" my itinerary a lot because of some of these locations I really want to experience... it is not easy at all to be able to do such a thing if you are with another person...

Brilliant insightful video, thank you very much. Though I wonder if you shouldn't address the matter of language more ? The language barrier is what would bother me most about travelling solo in Japan. How can you connect with locals when you don't speak Japanese? Especially in the countryside. I see a profusion of extremely nice spots to visit in Japan. Ultimately though, I do not wish my summer or spring break to be an exercise in silence fasting. That doesn't sound like a break, but like punishment - why would I spend so much for a beating?

100% agree, I'm going on my own. One off topic question, I have a Panasonic camera, but want to upgrade to the newest model (pocketable but with good zoom and 1" sensor, nothing fancy) I would like to sell mine and buy the new one. Which place would you recommend in Tokyo? Thank you.

I find Yodobashi or Bic Camera the easiest with a good selection of New cameras. they offer tax free.. I recommend asking if they have the international version (sometimes they have two versions Japanese and International)

And yes, there are bad apples everywhere. I was at NAMBA station heading back to Rinkutown when a group of mid-20s Japanese were carrying an intoxicated friend, who started yelling in my deraction, so I just left for a different train car. But that was my only really bad experience.

I leave in 3 days for my trip. Solo traveled to New Zealand, Thailand, and the Netherlands, and somehow am more nervous than any of them for this trip. I think its cause Japan is so structured and i'm so used to the chaos I just don't want to stand out.

From my view, as a female, I often have people say "aren't you scared as a girl travelling alone?". I find Japan really safe and would rather be alone than with anyone. There is one area of Tokyo I find a bit suss at night, I just don't go there unless I find someone to tag along with. Just be sensible, follow your gut, and you'll be fine. I am disabled and ngl, I was scared to go to Japan for seriously YEARS because of how I heard about social stigma etc. Obviously subjective but in my experience, people are much more accepting in Japan than my home country (the main reason I plan to move there). The one thing I would say about that, I CAN get up stairs if needed, just slowly. Elevators may be hidden away or inconvenient. I hear able-bodied people saying how rare elevators are and like "no, don't speak for us, if you need they can be found, just not always obvious/convenient". I also find, I'm very much someone who tries to push my limitations and even when I fail, I find that effort is very much valued in Japan and when people see me make an effort, they are more willing to help.

@@NinjaMonkeyguy After chilling/decompressing from the long flight for a day or so, Nikko is my first stop (hopefully, the first week of November the autumnal colors will still be lovely) on the way to Yamadera. Then down to Ishikawa (Kanazawa & Kaga) & Gifu (Shirakawa-go, Takayama & others). Stop in Nagoya, before the triumvirate of Kyoto, Nara & Osaka. Visit Kōyasan before heading to Hiroshima and Miyajima. Then head back to Tokyo, but along the way visiting a friend in Fujieda, stop in Hakone for a day, then Kamakura & Yokohama. There will definitely be a couple onsen and/or ryokan visits, but most of my lodgings will be much more austere. It's been many years since I last visited Japan and my over-arching plan for this trip is FOOD AND PHOTOS. Perhaps, in a couple years, I'll do a FOOD AND PHOTOS trip during Sakura season. Even though most of my time is only in Kanto, Chubu and Kansai, in reality I could limit my traveling even further and still have a vacation most visitors to Japan would envy, but as they say, "Go big or go home!"
