What should you pack when visiting Japan? I think there are 7 essential items for a Japan trip that you should definitely put on your packing list, or remember to buy once you arrive in the country. Some of these items are really not obvious as necessary until you get here, but if you have them, you'll be travelling like a local.

For umbrella, if you are okay, you could buy it from any conbini for your own usage or as gifts. They sell really really nice transparent see through ones and every time I bring home mine from Japan, my friends and family want one haha. They also last really long, mine is almost 7 years old (Bought it in 2015 during a rainy june worktrip). If I recall, my medium size is about 800 yen. 1 very important item I recommend to bring your own underarm deodorants because I don't recall them being sold or easy to get in Japan. I found more scented wipes being sold in the conbini instead. And lastly, I would suggest to bring some plastic bags and reusable bags. I usually carry 1 or 2 of this in my handbag because it's very hard to find rubbish bins and you will end up carrying your trash for hours sometimes and also some plastic bags u buy are very thin and a bit difficult to use to carry your purchases long distance (etc. grocery plastic bags). Hope this helps! Edit: Also fun fact for female travelers, if you ever need to purchase feminine hygiene products from places like conbini, they wrap the products up very nicely like a gift present lmao haha. I was just sharing my tips as someone who does a lot of solo travel alone in Japan ( I make it a point to extend my stay every single work trip i make to japan for a few days hehe). 1) comfortable shoes (goretex - as you say it rains!, would agree on umbrella but they are easy to get hold of, maybe a good breathable waterproof jacket as well) 2) powerbank, so your essential internet connected phone is charged all the time 3) extra masks (so you can stash them in your bag and coat, so you are never without one) 4) plastic bags are a good call, not just for rubbish but to wrap your belongings inside your backpack.... for when it rains! 5) alcohol gel

When I was in Tokyo, I was given on the streets tons of small " tissue" packs.They came with a marketing purpose trying to sell thier products. Very handy! I also bought some wet wipes and masks!

Bring napkins. I’ve been to Japan 4 times, and going again soon, and napkins are a rare commodity. You always get the oshibori wet towel, but often that’s it.

Good point! Twice this week I've been at a restaurant where they had no napkins on the table, and at one place I didn't even get the oshibori.

I recommend bring the travel adapter for charging electronic gadgets. And the power should be dual voltage since Japan has 100V

If you shake your hands enough after washing, it won't be very wet. In warmer months it will quickly dry out anyway. I just stick it back in my pocket. You could use a ziploc bag I suppose, but I've never seen Japanese do this.

I decided to not bring umbrella, yesterday taught me otherwise. Sleeping with a mask is normal but 2-3am sleep time is also normal. My phone still has easy user replaced battery. I had to buy a pack of alcohol wipes to deal with those situations.

Yes, it pays to be prepared for rain. Alcohol wipes are also a good alternative - I always seem to get my hands covered in some food related sticky gunk, so I need that soap 🤣🤣

I was going to ask if the power outlets are compatible with western power outlets, but then I realized I'm not sure if UK and US outlets are the same. So it might be a bad question to ask, coming from the US. Was looking at adapters.

Some U.S. equipment will work, some will not. There's a slight difference in the pin shape. Best get an adapter.

Seems like it! 410 yen for a pack of 10 at Family Mart. The ones for your feet are a bit more expensive. I imagine the prices are lower at drugstores, which are everywhere too. Stay warm!
