In Alex Thomson's final film from Japan in our tsunami revisited series, he visits towns undertaking clean-up operations the likes of which Japan, and indeed the world, have never seen before - eight months on from the tsunami. .

Japan is probably the best-equipped country in the world to cope with something as catastrophic as this event.

The clean up area measures the same distance as London to Edingurgh, that's hard to fathom.

If there's a way to build to survive a tsunami, Japan will find it. Maybe breakaway walls on the 1st floor to reduce pressure and a 3rd floor as a safe room? Who knows.

Stephanie In the wild Well I live in a coastal town and we only had two floods this century one in 2008 and one in 2014. They did not do any damage at all as our buildings are very near the ocean but on a small hill so they did not cause any chaos.
@JMarieCAlove6 жыл бұрын
Stephanie In the wild People have built homes and businesses by the coast for centuries! Of course people respect the ocean! But building on a coastline has nothing to do with disrespecting the ocean. You could live more inland and a natural disaster could happen from a earthquake or a landslide after a heavy rain. People are usually alerted if there will be an oncoming flood or a hurricane so the people will have time to live for safety. You seem to care more about the ocean than people who might get badly hurt or worse.. the ocean will be just fine and there's a lot of people caring for the ocean who help keep it clean
@dcoolbro795 жыл бұрын
The ocean is very important part of japanese culture and livelihood for some. They hadn’t seen a tsunami like this in more than a century. They just need to build bigger and stronger sea walls, which they’ve done. And build stronger and higher buildings.

@@JMarieCAlove Nature's fury isn't a selection process. They were all unfortunate to have been caught in it. Tsunamis have been a part of life long before man. I stand by their comment in that we need to learn to contain our messes. Tsunamis are a part of life. Either have an eco-friendly coastline in tsunami-prone areas or find a way to prevent the contamination of our oceans and waterways.

Stop building so close to the ocean!
@JMarieCAlove6 жыл бұрын
beth98362 R Every place in other countries that have the ocean near by, they always build near the ocean. Not just on Japan. No one knows when a Tsunami is going to happen and that's the first disaster since the 1940s! Almost every coast line has homes or businesses. If they built homes or businesses inland, it would be too crowded and no one knew how far those waves were going to go. And even buildings inland can be destroyed by an earthquake, so basically, you're not as safe either if you live more inland, natural disasters happen anywhere
