Damn that apple pie looked good. I love Tohoku, I've spent a lot of time in Yamagata. Still plenty of amazing places to discover without joining the crowds at the popular hyped places like Ginzan Onsen. Can't wait to get back. Having said that, Kakunodate is probably one of my favourite day trips, absolutely beautiful.

Thank you for sharing this trip. My friends and I are planning a trip to Tohoku this autumn 2023. We are coming from the Philippines and our port of entry will be Tokyo. We plan to stay there for 7-8 days. Can you suggest in what prefecture to stay in to maximize our trip? What places are a must see for the best autumn display? Cultural immersion and best food? Best month and week of the month. Do we need to purchase a 7 dayJR pass or just JR East pass? Thanks in advance.

That is exciting :) It really depends on what kind of places you like but the must-visit places, in my opinion, are Tokyo and Kyoto! If you like to visit more places and don't mind moving places a lot I would recommend buying a JR rail pass. (👉 other places I recommend are: Osaka, Shizuoka, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Tohoku, Okinawa etc) For the autumn display, I recommend Kyoto (Arashi Yama for example) and Tohoku (the places I mentioned in this video). Depending on which month of the autumn you will visit, you can decide the place to go. Autumn leafs in Tohoku are the earliest.
