I live in the UK and like to open things the “Japanese” way because I like to keep and sometimes reuse the paper. My grandma usually wraps things in different wrapping paper each year so I like to remember that by keeping it.

I'm also from the UK and do the same. It's the way I was raised by my family. There are two kinds of people in the UK though. It genuinely hurts my heart when people rip open presents without being careful, and then just throw all the pretty paper, which someone has spent time designing, straight into the (wrong) bin...

My excuse to save wrapping is that I have a bullet journal. I like to conveniently ignore the fact that I don't actually use the thing anymore... Honestly, I actually got full rolls of wrapping paper just to use in my arts and crafts... mostly because I found SOLID HOLO PAPER! I love it but it has a plastic finish on it so I can only use it for backgrounds and cutouts. I can use my paint markers on it but everything else just wipes off. I ended up covering a piece of cardboard in it to make myself a back-up pallette for my acrylic paints because the coating is so thick. It's GREAT to avoid tearing when actually using it as wrapping, but I do wish I could use my calligraphy markers and brush-tip pens on the stuff. I need to get those brush tip Poscas! If only I hadn't spent so much on wrapping XD.

When I was young, I learned about furoshiki wrapping. I had received a gift from a Japanese friend and the fabric and presentation was so beautiful I never wanted to use wrapping paper again. While paper is cheap and easily available, whenever I want to impress or just make someone feel extra special, I use Japanese wrapping cloths with small accent pieces or flowers. It's a small thing, but always appreciated.

I’ve always opened my gifts trying to preserve the paper, because my family is kind of artistic and often the wrapping is seen as something that was done in a very precise, unique, or creative way. Also, when I was younger, we didn’t have a lot of money and so much of the time we were able to reuse the wrapping if it wasn’t torn up or destroyed. Have a great holiday season, everyone!

There is also a cultural difference in showing appreciation for the gift; ripping the wrapping off quickly to show how much you cannot wait to get to the present inside the wrapping paper. ^o^ I live in Greenland, and it's mostly the "American" way here. It's not a lack of appreciation for the wrapping paper; the focus is just more on the intended gift inside. Edit: The people who do unwrap gifts slowly do so to be able to reuse the wrapping paper, but it's more when the wrapping paper is really nice.

It was a tradition in our house to be very messy with opening Christmas presents! Whenever my family got together for Christmas (15-20 people max), we would all open presents in the living room at the same time. By the time we were done, the entire living room floor would be COVERED in wrapping paper... and us kids would play in it and have paper ball fights while the adults watched and laughed. Even our pets would play in it! My cousins and I used to "bury" each other in the wrapping paper too. After we had our fun, all the kids and adults would clean it up together and we'd have dessert. That was one of my favorite traditions as a kid!

That's fucked up and you can leave anytime and i insist if you continue to feel this way, leave and don't vote on your way out because there's no point if you're not going to stay. Im sure we can find someone to trade you with and they'd be a lot my re grateful for being an American.

@@jadynnewsome9696 worst people hmmm that's demonstrably untrue. we are a beacon of hope for tens of millions that are stuck in shitty situations. You just focus on the dumb shit our government has done and not the good. "No one is a true believer like a converted" you need to wake the fuck to some facts like when ever there's a disaster our private citizens donate the most for those causes. Our front door says "bring us your tired and poor". A nation's people isn't their government.

I personally HATE ripping wrapping paper, I always love how it looks! And when I’m having a bad day all I gotta do is look at a teeny tiny bit of it and it immediately makes me remember all the awesome times during the holidays!

As an American, I always tell people that get me gifts “don’t wrap them” because 1.) I appreciate them just the way they are (don’t have to put so much effort in wrapping them) and 2.) because I will rip it all.

It’s a custom in Japan to formally “apologize” and bow while handing the gift to show how humble you are for the gift being so small and insignificant. Even if it isn’t a small gift …

In Austria we open gifts like the Japanese. 1. We don’t rip the paper because we are showing gratitude towards the person that took the time to wrap it. 2. Because it’s a cultural thing that has been done for centuries

Somebody spends time and effort to wrap your gift. Have respect and open it gracefully. Not all Americans do that. There are many different socioeconomic levels of families who raise their kids differently.

I have a small Etsy shop and I think people really like receiving something that is well and thoughtfully packaged. I definitely have taken inspiration from Japanese culture and how they treat ordinary objects respectfully and the attention to detail that is built into even the most mundane things.
