I'm also from the UK and do the same. It's the way I was raised by my family. There are two kinds of people in the UK though. It genuinely hurts my heart when people rip open presents without being careful, and then just throw all the pretty paper, which someone has spent time designing, straight into the (wrong) bin...

My excuse to save wrapping is that I have a bullet journal. I like to conveniently ignore the fact that I don't actually use the thing anymore... Honestly, I actually got full rolls of wrapping paper just to use in my arts and crafts... mostly because I found SOLID HOLO PAPER! I love it but it has a plastic finish on it so I can only use it for backgrounds and cutouts. I can use my paint markers on it but everything else just wipes off. I ended up covering a piece of cardboard in it to make myself a back-up pallette for my acrylic paints because the coating is so thick. It's GREAT to avoid tearing when actually using it as wrapping, but I do wish I could use my calligraphy markers and brush-tip pens on the stuff. I need to get those brush tip Poscas! If only I hadn't spent so much on wrapping XD.

When I was young, I learned about furoshiki wrapping. I had received a gift from a Japanese friend and the fabric and presentation was so beautiful I never wanted to use wrapping paper again. While paper is cheap and easily available, whenever I want to impress or just make someone feel extra special, I use Japanese wrapping cloths with small accent pieces or flowers. It's a small thing, but always appreciated.

There is also a cultural difference in showing appreciation for the gift; ripping the wrapping off quickly to show how much you cannot wait to get to the present inside the wrapping paper. ^o^ I live in Greenland, and it's mostly the "American" way here. It's not a lack of appreciation for the wrapping paper; the focus is just more on the intended gift inside. Edit: The people who do unwrap gifts slowly do so to be able to reuse the wrapping paper, but it's more when the wrapping paper is really nice.

It was a tradition in our house to be very messy with opening Christmas presents! Whenever my family got together for Christmas (15-20 people max), we would all open presents in the living room at the same time. By the time we were done, the entire living room floor would be COVERED in wrapping paper... and us kids would play in it and have paper ball fights while the adults watched and laughed. Even our pets would play in it! My cousins and I used to "bury" each other in the wrapping paper too. After we had our fun, all the kids and adults would clean it up together and we'd have dessert. When I visited Japan, I was enthralled with the way the ladies wrapped the most mundane items. I remember opening things very carefully and refolding the wrapper so I could try to learn how they did it. Everything is done beautifully in Japan.
