Giant robot was my absolute favorite TV show back in the 70s. When I was 6 or 7, I would sneak off to my friend's house to watch it because my mother would only allow us to watch 1 hour of TV in the house and only after we practiced the piano for 30 minutes. LOLL... the good old days

You can thank the obscure band Mystic Moods Orchestra's song First Day of Forever for the theme. The producers just took the music and added expository lyrics to it. The man responsible for the dub was Mel Welles,an actor who had played Mr Mushnick in the original Little Shop of Horrors, and some of his humor bled into the translation.

I also grew up in Chicago in the 70s. When I went to school in Texas in 85, I was shocked at just how few people got my references. Chicago, NYC and L.A. were probably the only markets with so many viewing options in the 70s.

OMG...Johnny Sokko. Totally forgot about this. It's been about 45 years and I found myself knowing those arm movements before Giant Robot executed them. This was the best stuff to watch until Star Wars totally changed the playing field.

9:30 This is nothing. I use to come home from school and my younger brothers would be wrestling in their underwear in the front room and usually had already broken several things after throwing each other across the room. If they had been 50 feet tall all of Tokyo would have been destroyed.

LOL!! I remember that ep of Johnny Sokko when Giant Robo fought a vampire that grew giant-size and used a shield! Where the hell did Robo get two weapons specifically to battle a vampire? He used "The Star" and "The Cross!" He just happened to pull the perfect weapons out of his metal ass, never seen prior and never to be seen again!

The only 2 things out of this that made it full time to American TV would've been Johnny Sakko but, it was a compiled episode movie known as "Voyage into Space" & the "Dracula" wasn't featured. Other than that, Speed Racer. I do recall one vague episode of one of the Ultraman things, or, it could've been the Japanese version of Spiderman (?) Not sure because I think both had a thing about capsule monsters & whichever hero had one that had some kind of acidic spit on them in an episode & that's all I remember. ( It was on when I was 5 years old back in 1970) After this, whichever it was, it got removed & for a tiny bit, you had Gigantor on prior to Speed Racer. The Johnny Sakko series ended up on Creature Double Feature around the 70's so, it took a bit for it to make its way over. After that, one had to wait for a lot of really cool Japanese anime / manga to be here, like the "golion" version of Voltron or the other with the cars, this was preceeded by the Gobots & for a short period of time, The Shogun Warriors. I think the only one that kept getting a remake was the "Gatchaman" series which started off as "G Force" & later became "Battle of the planets". I'd say by the 80's or so is when we had the Battleship Yamato / STARBLAZERS series which was fun & eventually, a live action version from Japan came out on DVD over here but missed out on how the Gamelons looked & screwed up a few other key moments. In between these things, we did it end up with a lot of the Godzilla & Gamera flicks thanks to Creature Double Feature & a very short lived "Ulysses" cartoon which got replaced by the Golion & multicar Voltron series. Of course, you can't leave out Transformers or eventually Pacific Rim 1 & 2. Supposedly, there's a live action GAIKING somewhere but It's yet to make it here, same idea for a MUCH BETTER QUALITY Gamera movie which I saw trailers for & a live action Gatchaman as well.

Speed Racer, also known as Mach GoGoGo (Japanese: マッハGoGoGo, Hepburn: Mahha GōGōGō), is a Japanese media franchise about automobile racing. Mach GoGoGo was originally serialized in print in Shueisha's 1966 Shōnen Book. It was released in tankōbon book form by Sun Wide Comics, and later re-released in Japan by Fusosha. Adapted into anime by Tatsunoko Productions, its 52 episodes aired on Fuji TV from April 1967 to March 1968. The anime was later re-broadcast on Tokyo MX from July 1 to September 25, 2008.
