I love how Japan still has so many artisans that have kept the old crafts alive to this day, so much has been lost in Europe since the decline of guilds and now the knowlege and expertise that was handed down through the generations is gone forever.

If people would want to pay more for hand crafted things then these types of jobs wouldn't dissapear. its the customers greed that kills these jobs. Same will happen in japan and probably is already happening but the west tends to romanticize japan so there are probably no reports about that. years ago an austrian glass manufacturer bought out local traditional glass manufacturer because our workers had certain knowledge about working with glass that you could only find in a certain spot in italy who never shared with anyone nowadays and our place because our guys had learned it centuries ago. So they bought the company up..sent in their workers for 6 months to "learn" from our local guys. I probably won't have to tell you that these guys left afer 6 months, not knowing anything about the secret.
