I love this! No fluff, no appeal to non-japanese tastes, no stage craft, just a bare-boned depiction of japanese music, dance and theatre.

It's amazing that Japan can still preserve their kinds of traditions and arts, while the world is moving and ruling around... I'm so jealous of Japan, these performances can be seen often, and they're not overlooked/out of sight of the new generations. Wanna be there someday :)

these seem like they might be onsen geisha rather than actual geisha, onsen geisha are cheaper and aimed at tourists, it's unlikely that proper geisha would dance in such a setting

@aemensabber Actually the reason they wear the white powder is because back then, before electricity, they had candlelight so the rooms were dim. The white powder made them stand out in the dimness of the room and of course the white powdered face tradition is still carried on today despite technological advances. :)

Art is very difficult; but criticism is the easiest thing in the world. Japanese classical dance involves a rigid system of gestures and movements to enact the lyrics of the accompanying song. Everything from the slightest movement of the fan to subtle jerks of the kimono sleeve have a symbolic meaning; they're not just swaying randomly to the music. Even the 'easier' dances take weeks of practice and training. Think about this before you comment.

@saburrito There is a different level of complexity, if you look closely. You don't see it as much here, but the tiny nuances and precision are what make the dance difficult. A very slight tilt of the head, while small and simple looking, can be both difficult to perfect and have a deep meaning. The beauty is in the smallest details carried out perfectly and with elegance. And in a very difficult costume to wear!

@Anonymous2731

@saburrito The point of this dance is not the complexity, but rather the skill to look elegant at all times. The geisha's job is to attract and always seem perfect. They wear specific shoes (which are hard to walk in and take practice) to keep their posture perfect, their make up should be flawless, and they never forget proper etiquette. The dance (although it can be a bit difficult with the clothing and shoes) is mainly to show off elegance an beauty and show tradition, not to breakdance. lol.

Those kimono look so soft and plush (might be the multiple layers they wear with the clothing). I'd really love to own one, though one not meant to be worn low on the neck, since that's common with how geisha wear their kimono. I wouldn't mind the long train (the hem of the kimono) either.

they might be hangyoku. the obi knot looks about right, and they usually don't paint the forks on the back of the neck. might be actual geisha, from Tokyo

Well Maiko's are apprentices so it's obvious the lead Geisha's will dance with the fan. Geisha's kimono's are more elaborate than Maiko's. And the Maiko's kimono's are very colorful and bright. Hope this helps!

No insult taken. For starters, a geisha would have two or three strips of unpainted skin at the back of the neck and a a line of bare skin around the hairline. Also, this is a festival! Part of the celebration is having different groups represent each of Nagasaki's districts. The simple truth is that they are performers.

That's because their kimono is white or something of that tone. Their skin blends in with it. It's clearly visible if you look hard enough.

@aemensabber It has to do with how they are entertainers; When women are Geisha they are not themselves, they become a character that is their Geisha personality. When the make up comes off they are themselves again. The make up is like a mask. It also helps them to stay anonymous. Also, traditionally women were taught to be very bad at talking to men so as not to be seen as slutty. The "mask" helps them to overcome this deeply engrained shyness and do their job.

@kattmat It perhaps...Geishas life in this times like yearsago, but they aren't a lot of. They are a kind of Japan's proud and when sb want to show how he is a traditional, lovin' his country man he choose to "help" with a guest, geisha. In example I saw a traditional okyo [ I'm not sure of name] and a japanese biznesman and geisha who was making a tea for american man. xp

Everyone, Memoirs Of A Geisha was a fraud. The writer of that false version of book and the movie creators got sued by the original Japanese woman who wrote her own book telling the real stories of her life. The groups told her they'd tell a faithful story, and created some twisted eroticized version of it. Even "Ask Shogo" channel as a master of Buyo and Noh theater along with his former Maiko wife who literally reacted to scenes from that movie and it made them cringe and they explained how inaccurate it was and why bit by bit!

It's a special type of singing that invokes different things. Think of "throat singing." It's frequency work. It's quasi spiritual. An acquired taste. It may take a while for some to begin to understand what's happening and therefore to get more immersed which leads to more joy. ❤
