My last trip to Japan, my Japanese friend took us (4 Americans) to an all you can eat shabu-shabu restaurant and encouraged us to eat like Americans. He looked so proud of the way we demolished the place. The poor waitresses were shell shocked after 2 hours.

I had a moment of being overconfident in Japanese and it backfiring. It was my first time and I had learned some phrases, on of the was “where is the bathroom” so when we arrive at our hotel on of my friends had to pee and I was like “I got this”. Approached the receptionist, and asked in confident japanese. Of course he answered in full japanese and I understood absolutely nothing.

I've done this a few times in croatian and german in german it was walking up to a cashier with a cheery "Hey these items please!" she then responded gibberish that i thought was do you want a bag. For those curious about the origins of the term “drip,” it’s actually quite easy to understand and explain - it is a slang noun shorthand for the metaphor “dripping with style.” So, as long as another language also has the concept of metaphors, easy explanation. Though, I must note that the “dripping with X” metaphor is definitely not limited to style, but the term “drip” mostly is.

Actually did a paper on the Buddhist monk mummification in college. The practice is called Sokushinbutsu. In essence, the idea is that the person who is doing it is trying to become a living Buddha. The people who did this would, over a period of around 3,000 days, would decrease the amount of food and water that they consume, seal themselves in a box with a bell that they would ring intermittently, and then become a mummy. These bodies are still revered all across Asia.

OMG FINALLY!!! I can't believe the niche topic I'm deeply interested in has been brought up. I love linguistics and the language you're talking about in 1:51:47 is called Guugu Yimithirr and it is one of those famous anomaly languages in linguistics that change our view on basic concepts like directionality. Linguistics is one of those sciences where people only speaking the wide-spread European languages like English really get to experience how Eurocentric their understanding of core concepts are compared to the rest of the world. Like the idea of basic verb tenses (past, present, future) not being a requirement in languages like Chinese, or like changing the way you speak depending on the formality like in Japanese, or like the idea of base-10 counting not being universal (I think Connor might now this since Welsh is base-20 as far as I remember), etc. etc. And also Connor's thing about English not requiring grammar is not really accurate. In colloquial speech (especially on the internet) every language can bend its rules a lot, it's absolutely not unique to English (a bit of that Eurocentrism showing up there), but the grammar never goes away. You can "slur" your speech or simplify it or play around with the rules (in fact that's how languages change, by wide-spread adoption of "slurred" or non-standard speech), but a broken down language is still a language and languages have grammar. The copium thing is interesting cuz that also happens a lot with other languages. I'm a Russian speaker and explaining some of the terms people use every day not even to a Japanese person but other Europeans, like English speakers, would take soooo much time with me having to explain major cultural concepts like how life used to be in the Soviet Union and stuff like that. I'm sure Japanese has same concepts that are hard to explain as well, like explaining what the hell "yoroshiku onegaishimasu" means in many contexts it's used in to an English speaker can take hours or you could just let them understand it by exposure, same thing for English (I mean come on, explaining copium even to your parents might take a while). And when it comes to using slang or "words that don't exist" or "making shit up", we gotta understand some things. Languages are not rigid. There are dialectal variations based on geographic location, socio-economic background, ethnicity, etc. and a lot of the time people using dialect-specific words that are outside of the standard language taught in schools, like in North England, get labeled as uneducated or not properly speaking the language, when they actually are. Their language is as much rule-based with legitimate grammar and vocabulary with people in their community communicating perfectly well in that dialect on a daily basis with each other that just differs from like the national standard. Stigmatizing and othering the regional dialects or whole-ass languages like Irish Gaelic or Welsh is what led to their poor conditions now, so I thought Connor might've understood this a bit more compared to Joey and Garnt. Dialects and regional languages are small pockets of huge cultural heritage and it breaks my heart every time when I find out a certain minority language or dialect is being replaced in favor of this rigid standardized language, so I really appreciate everone who sticks to their heritage cuz it's hard to do it when you come across challenges against keeping it every day of your life. TL;DR: glad Trash Taste are talking linguistics

One of the reasons why Americans eat so much in a buffet is because we were raised with the mentality of “getting your money’s worth” 😂 Also, if you came from a poor family like I did, we ate slowly and took our time at buffets because we wanted to eat as much as possible. When you’ve experienced hunger, sometimes you can’t help but think “I’ll probably never eat this good in a long time” and stuff yourself with happy tears 🥲 I also don’t like seeing food being wasted, so you better believe I’m taking leftovers!

1:27:00 I've been practicing parkour since 18. To learn the roll: you practice on the ground and then you start scaling the height eventually. Purpose of the roll is to disperse the impact to the legs to the whole body instead. You roll from the upper back (not a shoulder!) in a diagonal to the lower back. Really experienced practioner will be able to immediately continue running after the roll. Parkour is very safe if you practice it right and there are levels to it. As long as you are not overconfident and babystep each move (everything can be broken down to steps) you will be ok. Find a good community to help you progress.

it’s always funny when the boys get to breaking down english slang 😅 if i could shed some light: “drip” is an AAVE term that originated from the fact that ppl refer to their diamond jewelry as “ice”, and that ice was so cool but the person wearing it is so hot that it starts to “drip”. also bc the jewelry was so clear it looked like water which also drips. then the term drip just sort of evolved to encompass all fashion, not just jewelry. stg as a member of the black community can confirm, sources: trust me

I don't speak too many languages, but english is very much the most flexible language I know. The fact that you can verb any noun and noun any verb alone is in-fucking-sane. Just like the fact that you can just interject a word inside a different one and it still makes sense. It's definitely the ultimate language for slang, to the point that the younger generations have pretty much given up on making new slang in their native tongue and are just either directly translating or straight-up borrowing english slang, even if it doesn't really make sense when translated.

Wow, finally a take on skydiving. There aren't a lot of people that talk about it and actually want to do it more than once. I've been on a path to get my own skydiving license for roughly the same reason as Connor. In order to take a random friend who wants to jump you need 500 certified work jumps, and about 100 jumps in the past year (pretty much being tandem certified).

Air quotes are typically used to emphasize/dramatize a quote. Usually implying suspicion/distrust of the quoted party. In the year of our lord 2022 most air quotes are used in a sarcastic or joking manner when the punchline implies the quoted party is lying or exaggerating. Note: the more times you open and close the pointer and middle finger and the more vigorously you move your arms the more emphasis/drama is injected into the conversation. other nonverbal gestures often accompany the air quotes such as eye rolling.

The strategy to buffets (and I've heard a lot of my friends and family here in the US tell me this) is to starve/limit yourself hours before you go. There's also a course as to what to get first to last, when to take sips of water, etc. It's a whole system.

1:18:45 Hey Connor, you _might_ be able to stitch together a stable enough connection to livestream what would be (to my knowledge) the first livestreamed skydive. There's some Japanese Satellite options (it's still incredibly dubious from a connectivity standpoint) like SKY Perfect JSAT. Or, you'd need a dive site low enough that a nearby cell tower is at a physically lower altitude (dunno much about Japanese geography, but it's maybe feasible).

1:58:44 I don't know if this is a thing but I tried to think about possible origins for the word "drip" in relation to ones clothing and I think this makes perfect sense. When something is Lit, it means it is good / awesome, and when you got good / expensive jewelry, you have "ice". So, what happens when you look lit and you have ice? What happens when you lit ice? You have drip.

The problem I've found with gamifying duolingo is that for a long time it's been more point efficient to practice easy lessons than to learn new stuff - so if I want to do well in the leagues the best strat is to just get my daily 15 minute double points boost and blast through some really easy lessons on stuff I already know. Think they might have finally changed that now though so I might start actually learning again.

Got to wait for the hanabi (firework) festivals coming up this year. Then the cities use a spacious area (usually some grassy parts), and sometimes shut down roads. I would also recommend going to the Kawagoe festival for anyone in Tokyo in October (it’s about 40 minutes from Ikebukero station). There are lots of shops, restaurants, food stands, games, and best of all traditional floats to see. You don’t need to wear yukata and it’s usually not to hot or cold.

Talking about buffets, when my brother and his friends were late teens/early 20s, they went to a Chinese buffet where we live (SW USA) and they kept eating so much the Chinese owner came to their table and told them, "Hey! It's all you can eat, not all you can eat all day" LOL We still have a good laugh about it.

Why? It means he’s a pool table repair man. They cant fix themselves and if they break no one tosses them out and buys a new one outright. 🤷‍♂️ the right question would be if he could get you a deal on one.
