Great going dear Mayo.. our family love this sabut masur receipe.. you can wash & directly cook this in cooker with little more water in it.. put some oil alongwith turmeric.. Also, you can cook masoor split daal.. the red one.. no need of cooker.. you can just wash & soak for half an hour and can directly Cook on sauted onion ginger garlic etc. Add salt after daal is cooked softly.. this is also very tasty, almost like chicken soup.. happy cooking.. delightful video..

Mayo baby, Masoor is easy to cook in pot mounted on open flame without soaking or using pressure cooker. The dal breaks down with rise in water temperature of open pot. Dal becomes lighter and rises on top and floats indicating done. You pre-fry in open pot at start or fry when dal floats on top followed by heating time for homogenisation and consistency time.

You can in fact cook anything you want without onion and garlic and still get great aroma if you just use Hing (Asafoetida). In our family we don't eat onion and garlic (lots of Indians don't eat either) but still people are crazy for the food my mum cooks. Some even said it tastes better than food with onion and garlic. Still, it's a personal choice. Also these KZbin cooks complicate things a lot. In most Indian families, dal is cooked in a very simple manner, even tomatoes aren't used everyday but a very important thing which makes dal tasty is छौंक or tempering with spices and oil. I personally like Arhar (pigeon pea) dal a lot, next is lentil(urad) and then Masoor. It's actually very healthy yet easily digestible. Moong dal is the most nutritious of all but I like it only in Khichdi.
