While Admiral Ernest King had actually lost that debate over Formosa to General MacArthur due to Formosa being especially heavily defended as an important staging area for Japan's war on China and more easily replaceable, as were B29 airbases in China for the US, by the capturing of Pacific Islands in range of Japanese southernmost home Island Kyushu. Formosa was nevertheless a remaining threat to the Philippines and Okinawa, thus the airstrikes. Taiwan is strategically valuable today and why a compromised balance has been the norm in our relations with Taiwan since the Nixon administration . . . Thus far.
