I really enjoy learning Japanese its my first time hopefully I will be traveling to Japan by July 2013.

I'm not sure if you got your answer yet, and I'm still learning Japanese, but how I understand it is: in this case, the "shi" in "ohashi" can not be mistaken for any other character. So the "i" in "shi" can be dropped when speaking 'cause you know they mean "shi" even though you only hear "sh". Both work though. You can say "ohashi" with the "i" or "ohash" and the "i" is understood. Kinda' like "desu" or "des[u]". Orally it may be omitted but writings will show it's the same thing.

"shi" and "chi" are kind of tricky syllables, because the "i" part is not really stressed. Sometimes you can think of them as "implied or "slient" in normal speech. When speaking in normal conversation, it will sound like "sh", but I think she emphasized the "i" that one time just to be clearer about what syllable it is. If you say "sh" and "ch", you naturally get a small "i" sound at the end of those syllables, which is why they write it that way in Romaji, I think.

The way y'all eat rice, with it all in one dish, is how U.S. Military recruits are served their meals during training. The cooks give you a tray and pile all of the "food" on top of eachother. In a way we eat the same as Japanese people.

I watched all your videos and they have been a great help in understanding Japanese language and culture. You have greatly simplified Kanji learning. I am trying to learn Japanese verbs but understanding the various forms (eg kuru, kimasu, kita, kimashita etc) is really difficult. It would be great if you can explain the forms...onegai. arigatou gozaimasu Komori Sensei

Hello Komori, if 日 means sun and 太陽 also means sun, which of the two do you use to write sun in Japanese language and writing? Thanks for making this video.

Komori, if i use chopsticks with my left hand, is that bad/gross/rude? I know in some cultures, because of hygene tradition, what hand you use can bee seen as very bad. (I'm left handed; It is much harder to use chopsticks in right hand for me) Also, great job with the videos. You not only a teach many useful things, but your attitude makes me smile, every video! :)

Komori. why when you say chopsticks you call them Ohashi but when you ask for them they become Ohash? why does the "shi" become "sh"?
