Japanese Long Vowels with Pitch ーうん-ううん／いね-いいね／おばさん-おばあさん

Hi!
Have you ever wondered if you say long vowels correctly?
I'll show you a lot of minimal pairs for long vowels in this video, so you'll get to know the difference between a short vowel and a long vowel.
Examples are;
あさ　-　アーサー
いね　-　いいね
うん　-　ううん
おばさん　-　おばあさん
ビル　-　ビール
and a lot more!
There are some tests after the practice part.

Japanese is a pitch accent language, so when you practice speaking, please try to imitate the pitch too! That will help you sound more natural.

Wow, all this time I thought うん and ううん were more like a “hm” sound when preceding something like “そうですね”, not actual words that could mean yes or no. Davidさん、 When we’re listening to someone talking to us, we say うん、うん、, in that case, it doesn’t necessarily mean yes all the time, but it shows that we’re listening. And my shoulders are fine now. お大事になさってください is perfect for this situation 👍😊 Thank you!!😊

Thank you for this video! I've always wondered what's the most natural way to pronounce ん at the end of a word. I feel like I'm hearing two pronounciations at times. So one is more like a nasal sound (a bit like -ing ending words in English) and other times I hear it like the n sound at the begining of words like 'nice' in English. Gosh it's very hard to explain sounds in writing lol. I hope that made sense, thanks!

Hi! It totally made sense. Actually, there are 6 different ん sounds depending on what follows after ん. I'm dealing with 3 of them here in this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jXmThotrpLaJsK8 I dropped the most easy one here in this video, [n], at the beginning of words like 'nice' in English. Before [t], [d], [n], [r], ん is pronounced as [n] as you said. Not many Japanese people are aware of these differences because we do that unconsciously😅

Hi, thank you for the explanation on long vowels. I understand that for せんせい and とけい, it's just the え sound for longer. But what about when a word ends with -ていました for example. Or べんきょうしています。When I hear people say it, I hear the て and then い sound, not just the て sound for longer.

Sometimes people in real life (in various languages) extend a vowel when excited or putting emphasize. I'm wondering if there's a rule in Japanese to not extend certain syllable. For example if you call your aunt excitedly, do you need to make sure the ば is only one mora? Like oooobasaaan? To make sure you don't say grandma? I hope you understand what I meant.

In that case it will be おばさーん！(obasaaan!) for aunt, and おばあさーん(obaasaaan!) for grandma. If you say ooobasan, it means "great aunt"😄

@@SpeakJapaneseNaturally ah I see. So, only the "san" is extended. But I think I have heard in some anime where a girl called an old man "ooojisan" in a teasing manner. One example is in "Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei" episode 19. I know anime rarely depicts how Japanese is used in real life. So, I guess this is another anime only thing?

Sorry to comment on an old video but i have to admit, as someone whose language doesn't recognize linguistic vowel length, in example sentences it is almost impossible for me to distinguish the difference (as opposed to slow examples when you only say vowels themselves or single words) - or rather I should say: with you saying sentences multiple times 9/10 i do not hear any difference at all, 0%, none and 1/10 I'm 50% sure 50% not that i can hear it

It's like a long vowel maker(I don't know what long vowel maker is called)in Katakana version. For example in ビール instead of adding イbetween ビ and ル,it just adds ー
