The words "genuine", "authentic", and "craftsmanship" came to my mind when I saw this video.

The second machya is gorgeous. The typical japanese opposition of the strict wood lines vs the soft atmosphere given by the lights is fantastic ! The modern comfort brings a lot without disturbing the traditional architecture. Definitely love it.Thanks fo the visit that brings fresh air during this weird times.

Very nice work, conjures up memories, so happy re: the trend to renovate machiya + akiya. Been waiting for this video! The magic you weave in your stills is once again evident here. Crazy about the preserved antiquities of the 1st home but too bad the bedroom was off limits. Loved the tsubo niwa garden(!) + the modern beds & bath of the 2nd unit- wish we owned a blend of both!! It's never complete once the shrine portal stuff has been removed like this, however. Memory lane: my wife's parents' & grandparents' homes have lots of cool things like those seen here, too. In fact, we lived in the quarters above her family's shop, which is still their home supply/hardware business. Originally her dad made tatami below us. He built the family's 2nd house behind the shop, along a small, lovely river. Our quarters over the store have been empty since we moved back to LA in 2012 :_>( Thanks so much for giving us this tour, TE!! -m & h

Great video. Nice to see how you explore the inside as opposed to the usual outside. Would love to see you explore some of the bigger train stations. I love to explore big train stations as they are their own mini cities sometimes.

Just finished watching, here's my thoughts on the 2 townhouses. 1:42 , The word you were looking for is 'abacus'. Folks who really know how to use one could give calculator users a serious run for their money. I never had a chance to learn to use one. The staircase in the first townhouse, is something I'd not be able to navigate. to go up. The railing is on one side only, the side I need a railing on for going down stairs. The skylight is nice idea to illuminate the area, with natural light. The low set chairs and table in the living and living rooms, I could never use. My knees and ankles would not come anywhere near to bending enough to make it even remotely possible to get down to sitting in such a chair. And as for getting up, from such a chair, I'd need a medical sling hoist. The little inner garden in the second townhouse is something that I like, quiet and contemplative. The bathroom in the second townhouse though, is something I could not use. Bath tub. Too difficult to get into and out of safely. I love how the second place has the room to turn the side of the stairs into storage cupboards and drawers. Downside with those stairs, no railings at all. That renders them and the whole upper floor, completely inaccessible to me.

Loved this video. Reminded me of the place we stayed at for a few weeks in Gion. I got so many ideas that I used for my own home, as no one knows how to optimise limited space like the Japanese.

First off, this was a rather enjoyable video. Often you mention your lodgings, but never show them. Now of course regular hotels are dull, but whenever you stay in a townhouse like this, it would be well worth the time and energy to film them in the manner you did. Perhaps you can also do them for your tourist board employer and then have them put it on their lodging website (or airb&b, if they use that). Just spice up manner in which you describe the features of the house and you can add that to your repetiore. That and perhaps get a nice extra amount of coin for making said video's or at the very least making it more interesting for others to hire you.
