I have recently started growing JM's from cuttings and have 12 new plants. My Dad gave me a Sycamore Maple sapling back in 2000 which we potted up and it has grown well. By 2016 it was about 12 feet tall. This May, I pruned it down to 2 feet leaving a side branch and it has responded very well with 5 new branches and many leaves and is 4 feet tall now in a large pot. I even have it appear in some of my YT videos as it's been around for so long :)

I want to live in Tennessee. I love the accent, the light, the names of the towns and all those Japanese maples. Anyone wanna swap houses for a year? Liverpool UK!

I also reside in Tennessee and have a collection of Japanese maples. I struggled with their health until I discovered I have very alkaline water from my well. I now add an acidifier.

I bet he has fun when a late spring frost happens! I don't have that many but I do collect them and it never fails after they all leaf out we get a frost or freeze. but the point of this comment is when I get a late freeze or frost out of the ten types that I have the 2 butterfly acer palmatum are never affected! the two I have are in the most exposed part of my property flanking the end of my driveway at the top of a hill! no matter how cold they never are affected nor do I cover them but the other 9 types fry and I've even lost whole trees!! also if you live in an area too cold or windy for coral bark types I'm successfully growing acer palmatum Japanese sunrise it seems to be the most hardy of that type and it too is in a very exposed spot so winter winds have no mercy on it!

Thanks for sharing, Matt. Butterfly, huh? I'll remember that. I'm curious, do you have a bloodgood in your collection? I've just planted one in September and wondering what I can expect. Or if maybe the butterfly might work better. It's in a very exposed part of my lawn and I'm in zone 5b. Hoping it doesn't fall victim to a late frost as you described.
