You have a meerkat in a tiny tank on it's own, meerkats are incredibly smart, social animals that need to be kept in groups, and do not make good pets unless you have lots of space to provide burrowing and desert type environments. Apart from that, I hope pets bring the Japanese and Chinese closer to our animal friends, and the next generation begins to treat animals with more respect than these countries do now.

This is absolutely horrible. The sugar gliders do not need to be in small glass boxes, with no way to glide, and with so many more sugar gliders. Yes, I understand they're very social animals but I mean, come on. It's over crowded in there. Sugar Glider. Sugar Glider. What word did you hear in there? Glide. Not Sugar Stay In An Over Crowded Cage. These small, lovable creatures deserve so much more than to be put in to these glass tanks with nothing more than what? shavings and some fruit? I used to own one of them about a year ago, she had died due to it being far too cold and that is part of the reason that this angers me so much. I know just how amazing so many of these animals are, just how sweet, affectionate and beautiful so many of these poor creatures are. Yet people treat them so poorly. It's all about the money they'll make off of the animals and that is absolutely horrendous. I am a twelve years old and I'm even able to tell that and have better judgement.
@hallyuniverse10 жыл бұрын
Sugar gliders don't /need/ to glide, that's only for reaching food and to escape predators, which they don't need to do in captivity. But they do need a larger cage, attention and somewhere off the ground to hide. They are nocturnal animals and shouldn't be kept in confined spaces in broad daylight as it is stressful to them.

@xXpurplebuddy10 жыл бұрын
First of all, I'm not an asshole. I handle certain types of animals on a daily basis, but not animals as wild as these. I feel like some of these might not be able to be handled properly because they are commonly known as wild animals. But maybe they were handled before and actually aren't that wild. Second, not all of these animals are reptiles. There are obviously mammals too. I wasn't even talking about the reptiles.
@DryGrindersHD10 жыл бұрын

@Natlatify10 жыл бұрын
DryGrindersHD He's not saying that these animals are bad, he's saying you'd have a hard time handling them. I mostly imagine he's talking about the mammals that aren't properly domesticated - the meerkat, the prarie dogs, the Armadillos. Those are animals that have not been selectively bred and domesticated over hundreds of years as cats and dogs and hamsters have. These are animals that are probably one or two generations away from the wild, which means their temperament isn't going to be like that of a pet, more of a wild animal that will not enjoy handling or affection and will likely bite you, as it sees you as a threat to it's survival.

+Canadian Blaze you can clip the wings so they don't fly off...you don't need to tie them down
@Lilmoviegirl8 жыл бұрын
Often times, people will tie leather strings with a bell attached to the string to an owl's leg so people can hear it as the owl flies around. Owls are very well known for having feathers that cannot be heard as they fly, helping them catch prey at night. Tying a string with a bell on it is often a good soloution than just straight up clipping a bird's wings, which should /try/ to be avoided if possible. Of course, I could be wrong and there's not a bell there, but that's a pretty common thing when it comes to having owls as pets or rehabbing owls.

Yes it does. they need perches of varying widths to prevent their feet from forming arthritis. Flat surfaces or perches that are all the same width causes lots of problems long-term.
@iiisopod9 жыл бұрын
You are right, but i have a feeling those might still be juvenile birds. so they may not be able to maneuver a smallish display cage properly yet and will just result in injury. Young birds like this are sold to be hand reared and become people friendly (which is great because they get to come out of their cages to fly and interact with people)
@SolitaryEngel9 жыл бұрын
The thing to keep in mind, though, is that pet stores tend to retain a percentage of animals for a long time before they are sold. Especially expensive animals, or ones that need extra care. Some of those birds might be in that cage for months before they get bought. :/
@iiisopod9 жыл бұрын
Kimberly Hartley That is a possibility but since we dont know the exact way the store handles birds we dont know if fully grown ones would be moved into a larger cage. I would prefer all the animals get more space and thats something that frustrates me about a lot of pet stores in general. But they seem to be in good health and if they were depressed or sick it would probably show a bit more. I had gotten a young ringneck from a similar situation and its quite common for younger birds to be kept in class/plastic tanks. And since these are probably hand raised, people might buy them much quicker then the others.

Fix your own problems in your own countries before you try to make it world wide. Action speak louder than words. I lived in America: SF LA NYC, Canada, Asia: Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Europe: Paris, Florence, Berlin, Bretange & Gratz. I've seen great animal husbandry and some worse in suburban America and European cities; therefore, you can't base something on a nationality or ethnicity. That's like saying humans owning a dog and cat is cruel, spaying and neutering a dog and cat is cruel, or domesticating or making hybrid dogs and cats are cruel. Dogs came from wolves... cats came from wild cats. Humane Societies and other shelters are killing pets everyday so you can go set up a riot there if you're some real activist instead of spending your days upsetting others online. Every culture has it's own view, you need understand people's culture and location before you make these judgments. People think cats and dogs should be able to run freely, if locked indoors it is cruel, while animal shelters and other societies say cats and dogs should be strictly indoors due to the danger of vehicles and predators. Everyone has their own opinions and methods. If you come to Japan or any other foreign country people will think you're different or weird. The way people grew up and do things are handled and done differently based on nationality and demographics. As far as stereotypes go, people in Asia make fun and have their own jokes of white people, where as Americans have jokes on Asians, Blacks and Jews etc. I've heard the reverse stereotype, "why do white people all look the same?" It's the same world wide - you can't change how people do things - but you can change the way you look at, think of and approach things. Be open and respectful on your word choice and please see or think of both sides of the story before you make an assumption or make judgements. If you give the benefit of both sides your argument will be taken more seriously. Also, please FILTER your anger and make it positive instead of useless bickering. Thank you.

Also they do have different laws on what is illegal, or not, as do we.
@calliejet449910 жыл бұрын
furryfritter it has nothing to do with whether they look healthy it's that they are in small cages that they probably never get to get out of. Just because they might be in good physical condition doesn't mean that they are happy. For example the groundhog is biting at the bars of its cage because it wants to come out! That is not a happy animal that is an extremely bored animal. It has nothing to do with it being an asian pet store I don't approve of any pet stores ANYWHERE

Absolutely disgusting, I saw several animals in there that should never be in a pet store. The groundhogs were losing their minds and the frogs didn't even have enough room to turn around. Some of the birds were in fucking aquariums, birds fly and perch, not walk around on wood chips like hamsters. The worst part is, I'll bet 75% of the animals in there don't get sold for a VERY long time, who walks into a pet shop open minded to buying a fucking meerkat, bullfrog, squirrel or a groundhog. The twisted people who do this need to be doused in gasoline and have a match flicked at them, heartbreaking.

These animals are in no way domesticated, or able to be domesticated. They're wild animals someone caught and brought in from the field. Being trapped in those cages is torture for them. It's disgusting.

How to fix a pet store like this: 1) No exotics that just can't be happy as house pets, obviously. The owl, the meerkat, the armadillos, etc. 2) Keep the birds in a separate room with a closed door so their noise doesn't stress the other animals, and preferably house less of them at once (I'm sure they don't like so much noise either). 3) Only make advanced care pets like the sugar gliders available by custom order, because they're vulnerable to impulse buys and very likely to be treated improperly if impulse bought. 4) Set up enclosures properly. For example, give all the animals several hiding places, toys depending on the species, proper substrate, an adequate amount of space, etc. There's so much wrong here. Just set them up like you would if this was a permanent home, both for the wellbeing of the animals and because many people will likely base THEIR enclosures on what they see in the shop, and that is not good given what's shown here. 5) Label tanks/enclosures with basic facts (full grown size, minimum enclosure size, average lifespan) and hand out care sheets with each purchase. It's depressing how few pet stores do this. 6) This is more of a suggestion, but I can't help but feel like having that many people milling around in there would stress the animals. If I owned the place and it regularly got this crowded I'd limit how many customers were allowed inside at once, like some businesses are doing now because of covid. And that's it- thanks for coming to my TED talk on this 6 year old video.

This is sickening to watch how Asians treat animals like this. They are always the ones to torture them, I wish they are tortured as well. Did you see how the rodents were biting and pawing the wired cages and the guy laughed like it was cute? That's called stress, they are biting and pawing the cage cause they want to get out. Plus the poor owl, it was strapped on a perch and was not aloud to go anywhere, staying on a perch for long periods of time is bad for their feet. How would you like it if your feet were strapped on a bar and you weren't aloud to move? Your feet would hurt just like the bird's. If only these idiotic Asians would put themselves in the animals's shoes and see what it's like to be treated this way.

@gusevans47411 жыл бұрын
griphlican21 birds dont need weaned.... weaned means that you stop feeding them milk. birds dont need milk as babies....
@penultimate738810 жыл бұрын
Gus Evans They do need to be weaned. Birds are fed by their parents until a certain age, where they then find their own food. Another definition of "wean" is to accustom someone to managing without something on which they have become dependent or of which they have become excessively fond. Since the birds are becoming independent of the food their parents feed them, you could say they are being weaned. Lots of birds are fed food that their parents regurgitate and is not completely solid food. Some other birds feed their young something called "crop milk". It comes from the lining of the crop and is regurgitated by the parent. :)

This is possibly the most disgusting sight ive seen in awhile what in any way is this ok . Blows my mind when I see our native lizards ,birds and mammals for sale as pets in other countries when we don't allow it here this shit needs to stop

Yes you are right but animals need to be free. It's like us in jail we are stuck in there until we are saved. In a jail you get fed and are safe from outside and what I mean by outside is shootings and bombings and terrorists. We are safe but how would you like being stuck in there for sometimes life. I understand turtles, birds, mice, hamsters, and amphibians in a pet store but seriously an owl and squirrels.

Wait, so they have: meerkats, prairie dogs, owls, armadillos, sugar gliders, and squirrels....but no dogs or cats? Lol.
@snowy2moon10 жыл бұрын
So I thought I would share something with you guys. For those of you who are saying that these animals should be set free to go live in the wild, that really shouldn't be the case. I have worked with a lot of these animals before, and a lot of them need really specific care. For instance, most of the reptiles you saw need UVB lighting. A Lot, if not all, of these animals were bread and raised through captivity so even if they are normally not a typical " house pet" they couldn't survive since most wild genes were probably bread out. This probably sounds odd, but yes they are better off there than in the wild. Now most of you are right, those are not the proper set ups for them to be in. However this is a RETAIL shop, so there is limited space that they can have to each animal. Since most are babies, this is not too big of an issue. Also, you must take into account that these animals will be sold at some point. Most are probably only there for a couple months at most. I am basing all this information however from working at a petsmart in america. Our guidelines for the animals might be different to the ones over there, but for the most part, I knew each animal I saw. Their tanks/cages look decently managed and that is probably the biggest factor to their health rather than just the size. A clean small cage is better than a filthy large cage. :) I hope this might have put some of you at ease a bit, but I am sure some people will think I am wrong on this :)
