wow just coming back to this video 13 years later. this video inspired me to learn Japanese , move to Hawaii, and eventually visit japan. i was inspired to video at my local grocery for my foreigner friends but they kicked me out and it was really dramatic. i wonder if the ghost of matsubara shirts are still available. i grew out my old one.

I love hearing stories of inspiration!! LOL Unfortunately those GOM shirts are no longer available. But, if the KANJI HUNTER series takes off, I’m definitely gonna make T-shirts and pin buttons for that. So definitely share those videos with all your friends!!

I was in Japan recently and it was everything I thought it would be. Aside from the poetic beauty, the cleanliness, the yummy food, the lights, the traditions...what really struck me was how everyone was just so nice to each other not just to foreigners. They're kind of aloof at first because of the language barrier but if you make an effort, they will go out of their way, in broken English and creative gestures, just to help you out. Japanese people are an exemplary race. Japan is a utopian example of what nations should or aspire to be. That being said, I am not surprised that they immediately came to the aid of Filipinos even though they themselves are still recovering from the disaster. They are just a selfless bunch. No boundaries, just humanity. must respect to the people of Japan.

Ghost of Matsubara Hi Tom, I've been watching your videos for several years, and this one is what got me interested in your channel initially up to this very day. But with all respect, why not put the annotations at the end or/and start of the video instead of during the entire video like most people do? I understand that it helps generating income but I can guarantee you that spamming people with annotations 24/7 during a video , totally blocking out the content with annotations, will absolutely decrease your financial income on the long term instead of increasing it. People get scared away because it, hit the dislike button right away and will do anything but watch your other videos (let alone subscribe) and you can read that from the comments below this video. I for one know how you truly are so I'm not doing that, but it definitely scares away potential viewers. P.S.: Please don't become one of those commercialized KZbinrs who want to milk out their viewers and causing their channels to go to !@#$ :) I love your channel and I want to keep doing so man :p

Thank you for your very informative video. Two comments FYI, firstly, your comment about the "Chinaman" caricature being a somewhat racist picture; actually, most Chinese would find the term "Chinaman" itself to be offensive. I know your usage of it here was innocent, but just be advised that it may not be well recieved by Chinese listeners. Secondly, on a lighter note, the section regarding the various coffees in a gift pack; there are actually many niche coffees made only for the Japan market that cannot be obtained anywhere else in the world. Despite your rather, er... disdainful assessment, I have been attempting to find one particular Nescafe formulation for years without success; I would kill for that box of instant coffee, LOL... Thanks again for your great videos!

I went shopping to a Japanese supermarket nearby this morning and..Yes, there was a sign asking customers not to take a picture of shop's inside. I think it is due to a cut-throat competition among supermarkets so they just want to exclude the possibility of leaking crucial info such as what is selling well at what price and so on...

When we were in Osaka, Japan we were invited to dinner by my husbands boss. They had this wonderful lg square table in front of their sofa, looked like a big coffee table. The top was wood and it was draped underneath the top with like a curtain that went all the way around it. They said that is were they will sit in the morning to have breakfast. When we sat down our legs went under the draping and a heater turned on to warm us. So that is one way they stay warm while enjoying a casual meal.

I can't remember which city was the most expensive but I remember the report said it was not Tokyo, however it is at least in the top 5 of most expensive cities to live in.

I watched this years ago and just rediscovered it. I really laughed at him singing this supermarket chain's jingle at the very end. At 7:38 and 8:17 you can hear it playing on a loudspeaker inside: "Yamanaka - Yamanaka - Yamanaka Supa Seiru!" (Super Sale) At 6:37 he tells a woman at the fish counter that he's doing this video for "friends" - which I guess all of us on KZbin must be. At 7:13, that's lotus root.

@jpelletier0311 жыл бұрын
When you were talking about how there's nothing special with the soaps in the gift boxes . . . the reason is that it's customary to exchange gifts in Japan but don't get your host or whatever something too pricy, because then they'll feel obligated to get you something expensive in return. It goes from being a gracious present to an inconvenience. It's more polite to get something useful than expensive. :)

Although Japan has 'exotic' food so to speak, you won't have any problems buying and eating fabulous pizzas, delicious hamburgers (Mos Burger- yum...), decent sandwiches, etc. Japan is totally east meets west. All your favourite fast food places are there, Starbucks is prevalent, and the convenience stores (e.g. 7-11) sell many familiar snacks from the west. One of the pleasures of travelling to Japan though is eating Japanese food and drinking great Japanese drinks like green tea (macha). And, if you like Indian food you'll find surprisingly good deals at Indian restaurants in Tokyo (e.g. under $10 for a 3 course meal, naan bread and beer)!
@mokshya12510 жыл бұрын
are you kidding me ? $10 for a 3 course meal . i live in tokyo . i have never found a indian restaurant that cheap . i would say it would cost 500 yen minimum at lunch time .at dinner time they are more expensive

In South Africa where I'm originally from they pretty much have zero central heating as well. Only the really rich folk have it and sometimes businesses. Most people have those little radiators which are ridiculously expensive to keep on. When its cold you have blankets and jackets. Luckily in winter it ( usually)never gets below freezing point. Never realized before I came to Europe that its possible to sit comfortably in a t-shirt inside while its cold outside...

Actually I think the reason there are assorted gift boxes is probably for omiyage/ gifts. Usually when you go over to someone's house you're supposed to bring something over. With friends and myself we usually bring food if we're hanging out at each other's houses's for the day. I love daikon and konnyaku especially in oden. Forget the fishcake I'd happily only eat those two ingredients.

At the end, when he shows the store's sign, he sings an advertising jingle which is played repeatedly on loudspeakers inside the store: "Yamanaka...Yamanaka...Yamanaka Super Sale!" The store's name is Yamanaka (that's what the sign says) and the singers pronounce "super sale" in Japanese style, as "supa sairu". You can hear the jingle at 8:20 in the background.
