Affleck's character goes to fight the good fight against the hun as an American volunteer, thus setting up his unlikely survival and an intolerably awkward situation with his best friend who first comforted his bereaved girlfriend and then quickly shacked up with her, as they presumed he was entirely dead. Fortunately for everyone, the Japanese save the situation with an audaciously surprising projection of airpower.

It's part of the film, one of the main american pilots goes to volunteer as a pilot for the battle of Britain, is shot down presumed dead and then returns home only for the jappanese to attack pearl harbour
